$2.5 billion for a company that's made one successful game, in Java. That's the very definition of silly money.

If they make it back by july 2015 like they say then id say it was a good investment.

If Mojang never made 2 billion since release than what makes you think MS can?

They won't even come close to it.

Id say A because MS have said so and id think they would have planned this and have to prove it otherwise investors would be pretty pissed...also MC is out on more and more platforms and clearly MS have much more knowledge on expanding the user base then mojang ever could. Mojang made a good game they weren't necessarily the best business people

50 million copies sold, even at a top price average of like $20 each that's $1Billion, If they milk the strawberry float out of it they could probably match their investment, but it would destroy the core fanbase.

Hope you bought a copy of minecraft champ.

Minecraft 2 for X1 iOS and PC and continue to support first one. That's not destroying core fanbase is it?

Thing I hate about Minecraft on consoles is texture packs and character skins cost money. I can't see them adding more to a 2nd game than what's already on PC via mods. I could be wrong, h t the gooseberry fool people have done with mods is, just, amaze.

BHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Confirmed, Microsoft is completely insane. They should be expecting their money back by 2025 at the very earliest, and that requires literally doubling Mojang's revenue and maintaining that for the next ten years.

Opinion: Mojang's about at peak revenue and profit will decline over the next five to ten years. If that's really Microsoft expectations for the company, then I expect a massive write-down of Mojang's value next year to something vaguely sensible (around $500 million) and the missing two billion removed from Phil Spencer's battlechest.

Over the long term, best case scenario is Microsoft eating a billion dollar loss on this deal, and it will affect how much money Xbox gets to splash.

Maybe their thinking goes like:

50 million people have bought Minecraft.
90% of those who bought it on PC still play it.
45 million people probably play Minecraft
Xbox Live Gold costs $60 for 12 months.
45 million Gold subscriptions would be $2.7bn
If we make everyone need Gold or an equivalently priced subscription to play Minecraft, we're in profit after 12 months.

Why is Microsoft losing money on software for X1 a best case scenario?

They could've spent that money getting developers to make universal (Windows Phone) apps. If Microsoft don't make mobile work for them they're strawberry floated.

I read that as in a best case scenario that's the most they'll lose. Not that it's the best thing they lose money. I could, of course, be wrong.

Amazing that industry analysts see this as a coup for Microsoft but the SDF lads simply ignore it completely using their obvious intellect and prowess in how much veg to meat their mother allows ratio wise to call the deal bad and not only that but Microsoft are strawberry floated and insane.

Not sure if this will be a good long term investment. We'll see.
