Ah, that'll be why my internet has been gooseberry fool all day. The Xbox is installing Flight Simulator.

Was very excited to see this preload start yesterday - I have Tuesday off, so my opportunity to get started nice and early with this has improved dramatically.

I presume I could get away with the base game and use it online only right? I mean, my daughter and I plan to fly all over Ireland and Minnesota together and she has limited space on her Series S.

Pretty sure you need both. I suspect offline mode will save it streaming too much map data on the fly.

You can save certain areas/maps to the hard drive in various details. So I reckon the offline mode is a low detail layer to avoid the streaming of map data.

But… they wouldn’t have made it an optional install if it was required.

You don't need the offline mode download if you're only playing online.

I noticed in that video the guy hadn't downloaded the world updates for USA, Nordic and UK and Ireland. My point is, how big are these updates? I presume not that big as most of the info is server side? I'd hate to unlock this then have to wait another age to download the world updates...

Yup, That happens. Annoyingly you can't DL it from the updater. You've got to go into the game and then install them ( PC anyway )

Are they big?

My PC install for everything is 144GB.

If you take of 4GB for other stuff you are looking at a full install of 140GB IF everything is the same between plaatforms.

I wish there was some way I could bodge my Hotas 4 to work on XBox

When I installed them on the PC version, each one seemed to be around 6-8GB, so they will all add up to increase the overall size to extreme levels once they're all added for download.

They are annoyingly big, and not sure if you can skip them. It feels like every time I want to have a play I then need to download a 10Gb+ update.

Also the annoying way it updates "in game" is really poor. I've stopped playing until the performance patch is released.

One of my gripes is the complete lack of clear install folder. Complete bloody mess of a file system.

Downloaded the 92Gb update on my X yesterday. Looking forward to seeing this in action next week.

One genuine question though.... what's the gameplay behind these titles like? I've never played one before and hope it's not just some aimless take off, fly over some fantastic looking landmarks, rivers and oceans and then land / crash? Or is it?

Edit: also, are the flight times real? Will it take me 24hrs to fly from UK to Australia for example
