This sentence from Leonardo da Vinci embodies the driving force behind the Microsoft Flight Simulator team. And while all of us have our own personal associations with flight, the entire team is committed to the singular goal of capturing the artistry, mastery, and essence of flying. We believe part of achieving that goal is taking a moment to recognize pivotal steps in our development process, and today is one of our biggest. The culmination of time, effort, technology, and collaboration was edited into a 1:30 second video shown at the Microsoft Keynote presentation this year to kick off E3 2019.

On behalf of the entire Microsoft Flight Simulator team, we humbly and deeply express our gratitude for such an overwhelmingly positive response to our announce trailer! We recognize that without people like you, we don’t get to make experiences like this that span more than 35 years and maintain such a passionate following. Thank you for being patient enough to weather the turbulence caused by some of our previous missteps. Thank you for being willing to look to the possibilities of the future while asking us to be accountable for the past. We hear you, we value you, we want to make the next generation of Microsoft Flight Simulator for you, with you.

While this is not the moment to answer every question being asked, we do want to take the opportunity to answer a few important ones:

1.We are making Microsoft Flight Simulator. Emphasis on the word SIMULATOR.

2.Designed for PC, optimized for multiplatform support (e.g. Xbox).

3. Yes. We are supporting 3rd Party Content Development and Community Content creation. We are aware of the
concerns in the current eco-system and are working to address them.

4.Yes. We genuinely want to work closely with the community in the development of this title.

5.Accessibility is important to us. Whatever your abilities are, if you want to fly, we are going to do whatever we can to make that happen. Yoke and pedals, mouse and keyboard, controller, etc. No pilot should be left behind.

Over the next few months, we will be communicating our plans for the rest of the year, including important updates to the Preview Build/Insider Programs, and important development beats. Maintaining a collaborative relationship with the community starts with transparency and clearly communicated expectations. Early August is our current timeline for kicking off the communication of the development roadmap. We will continue to add clarity to this timeline throughout the summer. If you’d like the latest updates, please make sure to sign up for the Insider Program.

This is just the first step in an adventure we are honored and excited to be taking with all of you. The reaction we received from our recent trailer was an incredible reminder that we are not alone in this passion we have for Microsoft Flight Simulator. Thank you for sharing your thoughts, honestly expressing your feedback and concerns, and for taking this next step with us.

From all of us here working on Microsoft Flight Simulator:

Thank you.

Sincerely,

Microsoft Flight Simulator Team

The prototype was shown to Xbox head Phil Spencer later that year, to which he murmured, "Why are we looking at this video?" Then the Neumann and the team pressed a controller to show they could manipulate the action in real time. "He looked at me, I looked at him, and he said, 'Are we really going back?'" Neumann recalled. "'If we're doing this, we're in it for the long run. You're in it for the long run.'" And Neumann told Ars Technica that the plan is indeed a long-term vision: Asobo and Xbox Game Studios are pledging 10 years of support for this version of Microsoft Flight Simulator. That begins with an insane scope.

With previous MSFS releases, "People didn't like that it was just flying between two states, 1-2 planes," Neumann said. "They didn't like that it wasn't the Earth. Can you compromise on that? Nope. Now we know there's 44,000 airports across the globe. For this game, that's the baseline."

It looks absolutely gorgeous.

Really looking forward to this and I'm hoping the PC version will have VR support.

Yes, Microsoft Flight Simulator will come to Xbox consoles at some point, Neumann said, and it will be an Xbox Game Pass title on that platform, just like its Windows 10 version will be. And, yes, the game will be available either as part of XGP or as a standalone purchase.

Let me add, PC flighting/beta testing invites this were sent out to certain people. In it were questions about VR, so VR is coming to the PC version. It's not a stretch to think that Xbox Scarlett will have VR in some form.

It might be compatible with oculus or something but I doubt there will be an Xbox VR Headset.

I read further through the article and they've said that they've no VR plans at the moment.

Xbox will do something at some point down the line. PSVR has gotten enough headlines this time around that I don't think they can totally ignore it. But I imagine that it will be treated as a niche offshoot, just like PSVR.

I think it's becoming clear to everyone that VR is not going away! NMS VR won a lot of mindshare for the cause and if you're releasing new hardware without support than you are missing a key feature. It just needs one big new game like Bethesda's Starfield to get support on PlayStation and not Xbox, for everybody to know this. Don't forget Fallout 4 VR was lined up for Xbox One X VR before the hardware was cancelled.

I think that is what will most likely happen. Scarlett might come out the gate, or soon after, with Oculus Quest, Oculus and Vive compatibility. It will mean Scarlett will have high-end VR support before PSVR2 is released and it mitigates any risk for making niche hardware for Microsoft. But depending on how things go I wouldn't rule out MS made hardware although I think it is less likely.

I don't know why I can't post images any more, it goes wrong (I just get a cross), but those in game shots reminded me of a magazine cover from 35 years ago.

You're trying to link a gallery instead of just an image. You need to get the URL of the image file itself to embed.

Memories

A long time ago I worked at PC World. I remember a guy who would sometimes come in who was a pilot and he said he had a whole flight set up at home and he was allowed to clock up flight hours in the sim, I thought he said it was Flight Simulator, can that be possible? Presumably this is a full flight-sim but it has an easy mode for anyone who isn't a pilot.

A longer time ago when I was at school I did work experience at a local library and they had 2-3 boxes of this magazine which they were throwing away so I was allowed to take them. I remember it being a bit dry in comparison to CVG but I read every single one of them.

I used to work for Saitek/Mad Catz, and the Saitek side had a full Cessna replica set, and apparently with the correct certified setup, you were allowed to log a certain amount of your first flight hours on it.

That's what I call a next gen showcase  .

One of the first things I'm going to do is try and get a Eurofighter and fly it through tower bridge for an epic photo shoot :D .
I may need about 500 try's though :shifty: .

That has now changed and VR is a very high priority for the team.

I think the next gen consoles will be powerful enough to do decent VR as long as they don't go overly ambitious.
If they about double the resolution of PSVR that should leave more than enough power for a decent framerate and added bells and whistles. I just hope it's wireless as wires are starting to get on my tits.
I also hope they can make a decent stab at controllers as the PSVR wands aren't great.
