They have. Repeatedly.

I don’t understand why people keeping mentioning this as if MS are suddenly going to rip up contracts and have Call of Duty on Gamepass only. Mental

No one thinks that. It's what they intend to do after that has everyone wondering.

I knew they'd said they'll honour the contract but I had no idea they explicitly stated how the long the contract had to go. I just thought they'd given a nebulous promise, just like this "several years" comment. (Several years could just be 2 years, could be more. Saying for the life of the PS5 is different.)

(Also, I don't care one jot about CoD so this is all fantastic entertainment for me. I hope it carries on for a while yet )

Bethesda games seem to be exclusive.

Redfall is also exclusive and Phil said Elde scrolls 6 would be.

Because of the scrutiny and one of the worlds biggest franchises, they not making CoD exclusive, at least not for now.

I am surprised that anyone thinks this acquisition should go ahead. if you're not going to block this move then why wouldn't MS just keep on buying everyone up. If MS wants to make progress in the games industry they now need to do it organically and not just keep buying everyone. I really think 10 years down the road we will all be worse off if MS has dominated the gaming world like they have desktop computers.

Crazy that CoD is the sticking point in all this - the title causing issues and headaches/rule bending, considering it's, y'know gooseberry fool

That's not true. They can make progress by buying companies up to a point and they're not at that point yet. I dont want it to go ahead because it's gooseberry fool for the industry but it won't be blocked, unfortunately our laws are weak and there's very little stopping mega corporations buying up everyone they want.

Jim Ryan chimes in -

"I hadn’t intended to comment on what I understood to be a private business discussion, but I feel the need to set the record straight because Phil Spencer brought this into the public forum," Ryan stated.

"Microsoft has only offered for Call of Duty to remain on PlayStation for three years after the current agreement between Activision and Sony ends. After almost 20 years of Call of Duty on PlayStation, their proposal was inadequate on many levels and failed to take account of the impact on our gamers. We want to guarantee PlayStation gamers continue to have the highest quality Call of Duty experience, and Microsoft’s proposal undermines this principle."

So they offered more than you currently have an agreement in place for? And you're still upset by that?

Welcome to capitalism Jim!

He seems to overestimate the strength of his negotiating position there

I’m sure he’s spoken to their lawyers and it benefits their case to make such a public statement.

This is actually more relevant than we may have realised. According to The Economist, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman is “said to be fanatical about the video game Call of Duty”. And he could buy Microsoft, if he wanted to.
