Hyper Light Drifter is currently 99p on iOS (for the day I think) so that’s another one bought for the iPad along with This War Of Mine, This War Of Mine Stories, Dandara, Old Mans Journey, Civ VI, The Talos Principle, Severed and a gooseberry fool load more. Plenty of gaming to be had on my iPad now me thinks.

Rumours abound that Nintendo and Niantic's new mobile game will be called Pikmin Bloom.

Can't be arsed with these mobile games that insist you play them outside on the move. I play games on my mobile to pass the time if I'm stuck inside, either at my desk or when I'm at home with a few minutes to spare. If I'm out and about, I'm probably doing something else and don't actually want to be starting at my phone.

Not really a game, by the looks of the video. More a glorified step tracker.

I’ll probably download it and see what it offers.

Downloaded Pikmin Bloom to try it out. At the core is actually a kind of neat idea, it's a step tracker, but as you walk about, you find seeds, grow them into Pikmin, the Pikmin gather nectar that you feed them so they generate petals, and then you spread the petals when you're out for a walk to virtually plant flowers in the area around you.

There's a lot of stuff that's come over from Pokemon Go, some good, more bad. The good is that there's local landmarks that you can contribute to growing big flowers at by walking near them, which seems like a nice idea, and the landmarks seem to be different than the ones used in Pokemon Go, I think, not that I've played that in years, but I don't remember the sites near me being active in that.

The bad that's come over is there's all the same RNG-lite rubbish in there, and progression that's built to lag slightly behind what you have, so they can sell you boosters. If you do as the game shows you, and throw the nectar you collect to your Pikmin, they will sometimes ignore it, and then it disappears, wasting it. You can hold the nectar over your 'min, and they'll jump to grab it without you letting go, which avoids this, but I don't remember the game showing you that. Also, sometimes when you feed them nectar, the Pikmin won't produce petals straight away. They occasionally just go to some middle budding phase, producing no petal, wasting more nectar. You will also always have more Pikmin available than you can fit in your squad. As you level up, each level expands your squad size by 1, but the requirements to level up will include things like growing 2 more Pikmin, so you end up with lots in reserve, not doing anything. You're also limited to 2 permanent planter slots, like the egg incubators in Pokemon Go, so if you want to be growing more than 2 seedlings at a time, some of which require 10,000 steps and so sit there for a lot longer, you have to use single use planters. These get given out as level up rewards, but again, they're also there available to purchase, and you'll likely end up with more seeds that you have free use planters.

Just feels like there's a ton of decisions in this that have been designed to push you towards spending on the microtransactions, and it spoils what would otherwise be a kind of fun distraction to have as you go about your day.

Giving this topic a little bump as I was tempted to post a thread asking about games which work best on mobile, but the history of mobile game related threads in a search suggested it wont gain much traction! It's sad that mobile games are so often pay to play (or worse, pay to win) and I think as a whole they tend to be poor, but there are a few exceptions and I'd be interested to know if anyone has any recommendations.

One of the games which I have been playing a lot on my phone recently is Rebel Inc. Think along the lines of a single player game of Risk and you'll be somewhere in the right direction. The concept of the game is that you govern a country post war and have to battle rebels, whilst also rebuilding the country to meet the needs of the citizens and bring peace and stability to the country. It's a rarity whereby I think it is completely suited to mobile and would actually play worse if ported to any other platform. Whilst there are additonal addons, these are for extra scenarios and there is no form of pay to play or the like here. It is very tactical and a very good RTS.

Another game I've enjoyed on mobile is Cell to Singularity. It could be classed as an 'idle' game, where you gradually branch through research trees to evolve from a single celled organism to modern civilised society (and beyond). This game does feature premium currency which allows purchase of boxes for levelling up, which can also be unlocked through adverts or just patient play. I've prestiged something like 40 times in this game and it still draws me back, but now I just tend to pop on a couple of times a day and expand my simulation for a few minutes whilst waiting for the next update. It also features a very good solar system simulation and is likely to appeal to sciences geeks more than anyone else.

For Android users, I would recommend Google Surveys. Most surveys earn around 50p in credit and once you've done a few, it becomes apparent how to push through and unlock follow up questions and therefore extra credit. As an example, Google believe I'm a very high earner with tons of kids and am constantly going in to shops and buying things on credit card and sharing my receipts with them, which unfortunately have always been photos of a blank surface, but if they wish to continue to fund my mobile gaming with such nonsense, so be it!

The silly neighbourhood vegetable.

Old turn based RPGs on an emulator.

+1 for Cell to Singularity. I had a bit of fun with it.

I've been playing 80 Days for the Alphabet Challenge, it's really good! Also enjoying Archero - it's one of those games you always see advertised alongside utter trash but it's quite a fun little rogue dungeon shooter.

Has anyone bought a controller for their mobile before? I'm getting the backbone one for my birthday and I'm really looking forward to it. Spend a lot of time traveling visiting family and it looks perfect for that, plus a bit of game streaming in bed!

That does look neat, Johnny!

Did you know that most recent console controllers can connect up to iPhone and Android, too? Of course, they won't offer the "hold the screen" aspect that the Backbone does, though.

Yeah I do that with the iPad already. It's a bit extravagant but I was told I had to pick something for my birthday so I picked that!

Don't get me wrong, unless you play a lot of "core" console style games (CoD/Apex, not Candy Crush or Pokemon Go) or have a subscription to a game streaming service then its not going to be worth it!

I have gamepass, steam link and a bunch of premium app games so I have loads to do. Getting into Genshin Impact as well.
