I don't think you'd have to do any soldering, only if you wanted to make it so a button press could change the brightness. When I did my SP I just swapped the screens around. It's just a case of taking one ribbon cable out
It's incredibly easy doing any of this, including the screen swaps as the ribbon cables have clips that are really easy to release. The only tricky bit was the soldering, and those GBA ones You can just leave the wires free and use the default values if you want.
That looks great! Makes me think about giving my GBA a bit of an upgrade in the future, rechargeable battery and better, backlit screen would probably be the main ones, probably something I’ll never get around to though!

The only problem with playing GBA games on emulators or anything with a brighter screen is that so many games look overly bright or washed out because they were deliberately designed with more saturated colours to compensate for the dark screen

Pokemon Emerald nearly blinded me when I first played it via emulator, had to fiddle with the gamma settings to make it playable.
The dmg coloured dpad and buttons I ordered arrived this morning, but now I'm torn between having that or sticking with the monochrome colours I've got.
That looks so smart, Hypes! I've never owned a GBA but I really like that SP design.

Maybe... start fresh with another one, dude? Your first one looked so good that you could have a business going here!
If I could get the parts at cost, then there might be a bit of money in it for a side gig, but buying from a shop, I'd just get my money back I think rather than make anything.
Gba is a great console, probably my favourite Nintendo handheld overall, it's got a very snes feeling to it, plus it runs old gameboy games. For my next project I'm looking at making a gameboy macro, which is the bottom half of a ds lite, reshelled to be a GBA (as they have native gba support).
