It's insane how fun the hunting horn is now, I'd hardly used it before but in Rise it's just so satisfying with how smoothly the combos flow. Earthshaker is one of the better Silkbind attacks as well which is another point in its favour.

I mean, the only combo you really need is X, A, X+A, else X+A comes out real slow. And yeah Earthshaker is very satisfying, but I feel like such a cuck when I get knocked out after the first hit. Also leaves you badly open to monster combo attacks if you don't have a spare wirebug to jump out.

Been taking it a bit slower with Rise to avoid burnout. Wrapped up all the Advanced and stand alone Apex hunts to unlock Proof of Power. Attempted it once and was immediately like nope lol. Speaking of the Apex hunts tho, Zinogre is insane. Really fun fight.

How was this for newcomers in the end? I tried the demo and it was a bit much with all the control options, is the onboarding more newbie friendly in the main game?

I was in Uniqlo yesterday and see the MHR clothing line and it got me tempted again to pick this up :shifty:

From the sounds of it, a lot of stuff's been streamlined or made simpler/easier. This was my first entry and it was fun to pick up. I think the point of the game is to learn how to use all the weapons, etc. Though I only ever used Hunting Horn. While the general interactions are pretty fun, and learning how to fight new monsters is a satisfying challenge, I eventually just found myself going through the same motions over and over again. Though like I said, that's probably due to sticking to the same weapon throughout. I enjoyed it though, sunk a decent amount of time into it, playing with friends, etc. The amount to learn can be a bit daunting since it throws most of it at you pretty quickly at the start, but tbh a lot of it isn't really required right away, and you can just take a look and dabble in extra stuff at your own pace.

I think the game largely relies on its replayability - where fighting the same monsters multiple times is somewhat mandatory to hoard the right materials required to get certain upgrades - and then revolves around the player's own willingness to set their own goals and targets in the game of wanting to improve/upgrade themselves and feeding into the replayability. So if you're gonna be a Monster Hunter, you gotta want it :datass:

I think I'm topped out on this at around 70 hours played, and reached HR47.

It was good fun with friends but once I'd reached the point where I'd done every challenge at least once I didn't really have any motivation to grind.
I know if I keep grinding to higher levels more monsters appear but I just can't really be bothered.

In response to Milner - I too was a complete newb to the series when I picked it up and it's actually pretty accessible. The first hour or so is really daunting because it throws so much information at you with no real sense of what immediately important and what's seriously niche late/post game stuff. But once you actually get into playing a few rounds you quickly figure out what's vital, what's a bonus and what you don't need to be strawberry floating around with yet. Hell, I'm 70 hours in and there's still whole mechanics I'm clueless about what they're for (like what's the weird submarine trader thing all about??).

But if you're not a fan of grinding there's definitely a top-out position where you won't be bothered going any further.

It worth taking breaks since It helps with the burn out. Jumped back in after a few weeks away from the game and was really fun. Just wish the event quest were a little more interesting. I feel like they are holding back to let Stories get some limelight which is understandable.

Played a couple of event quests over the weekend and crept my HR up a little more (somewhere in the 80s right now). Unlocked the Stories crossover stuff which is cool I guess - there is actually one for the demo and one for the main game, so just having a demo save will get you something if you're interested.

One day I will reach Valstrax and the other quests gated up there. Probably once enough event quests have been released to get me there without grinding rampages

I've still not finished the main story, just did the high rank Mizutsune urgent the other day but haven't had the time to get any further yet. I think taking it this slow has definitely helped avoid the burnout I got with World, hopefully there's another decent content drop somewhere down the line to keep things interesting before they begin working on the G rank expansion.

The subs are basically an easier way of mass-gathering materials that you need a lot of, most entries have had some variation of it largely so that gunners don't have to stop and do a gathering mission after every other hunt to restock on their ammo (and to help keep stocked up on any other craftable items you use frequently like potions and dash juice etc.).

In previous games it was also a godsend for getting the right Nectar for upgrading kinsects on the insect glaive, but Rise streamlined that massively so it's not really necessary anymore.

World and Rise have basically switched the gunner experience from "worry about ammo stocks constantly and always" to "it's really not a problem". I rotate my subs through ammo craftables still but yeah it's much less of a consideration now.

Ah fair enough - I never got round to trying gunner weapons outside of arena quests in World and it's a similar story in Rise so didn't know how much fuss it is in the newer games. My only real experience of gunning was in MHFU where I used Bow as a secondary after long sword, I imagine things have changed quite a lot since then lmao

LBG is insanely good in Rise, I think it's the most popular weapon

Copy despatched :toot:

So is it best to just play the story mode first and that’ll teach me everything I need to know then move onto post game quests? This will be my first MonHun game.

There's not really a story mode as such, instead it's split into village (offline) quests and hub (online, but can also be done offline+solo) quests, with the story progressing as you play through both of them. Both of these are split into different ranks (1*, 2*, 3* etc), you unlock new quest ranks by doing a certain number of ordinary quests and then taking on an Urgent quest with a new/tougher monster. I'd suggest the best way of doing it is to try and keep your ranks relatively level across village and hub eg. when you unlock village 3*, go do the hub 2* quests until you earn 3* there too. If you're new to it this will help you build up experience (and materials to make better armour/weapons with) without jumping into the tougher quests too quickly.

At a certain point you'll finish the village quests (I think it's 6*? can't remember), but the hub quests continue into higher quest ranks - these are called High Rank quests and provide a noticeable jump in difficulty with some tougher monsters, new movesets, much higher health and so on. By the time you get to these you'll have a pretty good handle on how the game works though. Then once you finish the story in High Rank you basically start grinding up your HR by doing loads of quests to unlock more quests and a few new monsters in the postgame.

Yeah start with village, play hub at the same rank or maybe one rank behind, you'll know when the story transitions from the village to the hub.

You don't have to play it like that but it's what I'd recommend if you don't want to trivialise any of the content.

As soon as I saw hub quests increased rank I just stuck to hub quests. Gotta look good in front of the boys. Went back to do village quests after and they were mundanely easy lol
