Couple of quick questions:

* Is there a way to lock on to monsters? I've not spotted a way to do this yet and it's definitely making the combat feel less enjoyable than I think it should be!
* Can you block attacks, or is it just about dodging? I guess this might depend on which weapon I've chosen?
* How can I get my weapon out without attacking? I sometimes want to get my weapon ready so that I'm in "combat mode" but so far the only way I can see to do this is hitting the attack button which is a bit annoying as it makes the character launch into an attack when I don't want them too!

* There is, I think it might be with right stick but I don't remember; I've never used it.
* Depends on weapon; I believe sword + shield allows you to block with the shield, ofc, and other weapons like dual blades have counter attacks triggered by monster attacks.
* Just pressing X (Y for Xbox, Triangle for PS) while standing still or walking should unsheathe your weapon. If you're running while trying to do so you'll most likely do a running attack, though this might be weapon dependent.

Press in right stick to cycle which large monster you are tracking (top right) then I think tap L to focus. I believe there's an auto lock on in the settings rather than tapping L which maybe you'd prefer (but I think manual is more useful). I think there's a way to change body part too? Not sure I'm a gunner lol

Blocking depends on your weapon yeah. There are blocking and parrying mechanics depending on what you are using.

Sheathe/unsheathe also varies by weapon (for bowguns at least) but I think you shouldn't attack if you're standing still.

I had similar questions after trying it last night, in particular the lock-on issue, so I googled it. As Jezo said, it is right-click, BUT it doesn't work on the small monsters (which are all I've encountered so far). We're probably getting ahead of ourselves.

I did find myself getting a little exasperated at having to name FOUR characters before even being shown a weapon. So many important shops to be introduced to, then eventually the game casually says, "Oh yeah, press these two buttons to attack, off you go".

The amount of tutorial info it throws at you at the start is overwhelming for sure. Rise is the only Monster Hunter I've played, and after a while I just started skipping through them if they weren't about fighting the monsters themselves. There's so much in the game I don't know about and subsequently don't do which would probably make my time with the game easier, but I'm satisfied with my experience so far and the challenge the monsters provide, so tbh I would advise not to worry about all the tutorials too much. A lot of it is optional extra stuff to help optimise your build and material yield, but it's really not necessary if you're just looking to enjoy the game. The main part of the game is fighting the monsters, and I think the game does a good job of listing everything you need to know in stat pages anyway, and everything is pretty easily accessible or easy to stumble upon.

If you go to the buddy plaza, there is a boat toward the back that takes you to the training area. Here you can practice combos and general wire bug movement. I don't know if you have to visit it first before you can do this, but it's also easily accessible just by holding minus (back on Xbox, select on PS), and selecting 'training area'. I would recommend messing around with weapons here, seeing what feels fun to use, and what combos you can do (it should show which buttons to press too). Then at least you're familiar with the weapon before fighting monsters so you can focus on optimising your ability and strats. The only issue with the training mode afaik is you can't test things like counter attacks. Though if you perform a move and it seemingly does nothing to the dummy monster, you can probably assume it's a counter attack.

Thanks for the tips, especially the training area. I'd tried to go there too early, and forgot to go back. All the materials are a bit overwhelming, so I'm pretty much ignoring them for now. One question though: is it worth harvesting every plant I stumble on, or is it easy enough to gather things you specifically need later? I'm also carving any small monsters, which I assume is worth doing. And taking everything I can from the chest at the main camp.

There's not really a downside to just picking up everything along the way to your destination. Doing so will give you a decent idea of the material types in the game and where you might find specific things, which will help when you're trying to craft specific things. When I was much farther in the game and realised certain items existed (such as armorskin potions that boost defence), it was very handy to just already have the materials I needed to craft plenty. I think it's probably better to harvest mining rocks and bone piles than plants, but it's all helpful. When you speak to the quest maidens, make sure to select the light blue 'Optional Sub-quests' option before doing quests; these will give you more of an incentive to harvest things and you'll get good rewards for doing them too! I wouldn't worry as much about small monsters, that is, I wouldn't go out of my way to kill them since they aren't just an A press to pick them up. If you happen to kill some though, then by all means carve them!

I gotta stop writing so much here, I'm just as bad as the game's tutorials lmao

I'm glad killing small monsters isn't essential. When I first saw the podgy racoon things, I resolved to leave them in peace!

Get a cat who likes to collect things and you'll be golden

Ah, didn't know that would be an option. Thanks. I really am getting ahead of myself. I'm just going to jump in and flail about and see what happens next.

I’m going to finally start this (Switch) after I’m done on Xenoblade, shame it’s not cross platform play.

Agreed. I'd be down for some group hunts if anyone's interested....... (Switch)

Started this last night (Switch) it looks great on the OLED screen, I like what I have played so far (only a couple of hours) but yeah, there sure is a lot to learn

One question, in the Buddy Plaza, what is the advantage of hiring another Buddy? Do they come with you on quests along with your Dog/Cat combo you already have?

No, you can send buddies out on their own material gathering quests (Meowcenaries), or you can switch them out with your current Dog/Cat combo; I think some of them have different support types with different abilities. I've always just stuck with my OG dog and cat combo since they're the ones I made at the start of the game, so I have much more attachment to them than some generic blue dog called Udon, and they've suited me just fine.

Yeah, I didn’t want to get rid of my OG animals, I’ll have to look into sending some out on missions

Unlocked 4 Star Village Quests now and just took down Rathian :toot: this is really clicking for me now (about 12/13 hours in at this point) trying to get through the story stuff so I can take a look at the Post Game content.

Haven't been able to find the time to really get in to this, it feels like there's a game here that I'd like but I'm just not sure I can invest enough to unearth it!
