What are the chances of this dropping in price over time? If I can hold off until summer or winter, am I likely to be able to save £10/£20?

While it should be kept in mind that it is a high profile switch game and could remain expensive, MH games tend to price drop pretty quickly so I reckon you could get about £10 off in a few months, but I wouldn't expect more than that for a while (the previous one, Generations Ultimate, is still like £30 two years later)

If it’s published by Nintendo like some of the previous games then it’ll probably hold its price for a long while.

Monster Hunter is based around them. The time limit stops you spending 2 hours cheesing a fight. It prioritises DPS as the best measure of a weapon's effectiveness. It forces you to be aggressive and to manage your items effectively. Hunting efficiency, especially for quests with multiple monsters, is a serious consideration with a time limit. Some Elder Dragon fights (looking at you Lao-Shan Lung) are almost literally just DPS races against the clock.

The course time limits in Mario are basically inconsequential and I agree they would be better removed. I wouldn't say the same for Monster Hunter - failing due to time out is a legitimate fail state reflecting a failure in play. They aren't however so strict as to be the focus of the game.

What really? :( This is genuinely the worst thing I’ve read about the franchise, and is also kind of at odds with what I’ve read from other MonHun superfans (who have said that the time limit will never impact unless you try to solo monsters you have no business soloing). Also what’s wrong/bad about spending 2 hours if that’s how the player wants to go about it?

It shouldn't be something you will worry about but the time limit is of the same order as how long it will take you to beat a quest. It can take you 20 minutes to kill a monster with a 30 minute time limit, or over half an hour to kill one with a 50 minute time limit. You will occasionally come close to the limit but I definitely wouldn't let it put you off the game! It shouldn't be your experience to routinely fail by timeout but it can happen especially if you are underequipped.

It stops you from e.g. continually returning to the base camp to heal, or standing on some ledge and shooting for 1 damage for 2 hours. You don't want to play the game like that because it would be incredibly unsatisfying!

No, but I wouldn’t anyway because... well, because it’d be incredibly unsatisfying. I don’t need a stressful time limit to encourage me to have fun! And if you can shoot for 1 damage for 2 hours, to me that’s bad design, and remedying it with a time limit rather than fixing the issue is further bad design.

It hasn’t put me off, but having really liked my first crack at the demo., everything else I hear is cooking me on the series/game. :( When I said ‘based around a time limit’, I really meant high score games like Overcooked, where the time limit is meant to be front and centre of your mind.

EDIT: I meant ‘cooling me’, but that autocorrect works quite well!

I still need to play the newer ones tho. I'm surprised it kinda just stopped. With MH back in the popular eye, I'd be very curious to see more people try their hand at this genre. Maybe take a break from trying to make the millionth Soulslike.

God Eater is good from the little I've played of Burst but it's even steeper a learning curve than MH with the insanely in-depth gun and bullet customisation, I never got my head around it.

For me the best MH clones came on Vita, perhaps because it lacks a MH of its own. Soul Sacrifice is the best of them and I played a lot of it, especially great for its dark fairytale folklore. Second is probably Freedom Wars with the genuinely intetesting prisoner premise. I also thought Toukiden was well made and (especially as we never got MH Portable Third) the more Japanese stylings set it apart. Rise actually has a hint of Toukiden in it to me because of that!

On PSP I had Lord of Arcana which was OK and White Knight Chronicles Origins which was just bad. If Peace Walker counts that's actually the best of them but its much less of a clone even with the crossover content! It does the mission structure and multiplayer very well though.

I guess the point of this post is to say go and play Soul Sacrifice!

I missed out on a lot of Vita stuff but have heard about how great Soul Sacrifice and Freedom Wars was. I think I remember playing a demo of Toukiden and kinda liked the combat a bit. Maybe one day I'll have to try and go back to these. Lord of Arcana had a sequel which I played the demo of on PSP and that was really cool. It had these dual axe weapons which were absurd but fun lol. Peace Walker was a phenomenal game and I hadn't really thought about it being a MH-like aside from the special missions at the end. But it's a perfect example of taking the ideas of MH and making something new from it which is what I really wanna see from more devs.

Didn't know about the Lord of Arcana sequel! Looks like it never made it west, that's a shame.

Toukiden has a sequel too which I haven't played but is apparently also good. I keep seeing copies of it on PS4 actually

Also forgot to mention another game that I never expected to enjoy as much and that was Dynasty Warriors Strike Force. It's a musou that's structured like an MH game and the combat was wild because you could jump, dash (even air dash) and cancel attacks any time you wanted so it opened up crazy combo potential.

Played the demo last night and came away incredibly impressed, love the new dog and how open the area is without any loading. The game feels like a perfect mix of World and the old school Monster Hunter games.

Could't help myself and watched a vid about MH Rise being data mined. Not something I usually do but with Rise being almost a middle ground between gens I feel like it won't be as extensive as a new gen game. I'm mostly interested about the Silkbind attacks. I mentioned before about wanting more but it slipped my mind that we've already seen some that aren't in the demo so it's already confirmed we do learn more. But based on the leaks, we're in for a treat >,>

Is that confirmed outright then that we'll be able to swap the silkbind attacks like hunter arts? Great if so!

In Gen you supposedly unlocked more with story progression, so I'm guessing it will be the same with Rise. I've seen descriptions of the other SnS ones it got me even more hyped lol.

Has anyone got any tips for the dragon thing?

I cannot for the life of me kill it. It takes so damn long that I just get bored.

Did they scale the health up for the demo or something?

Maybe I just need to stick to heavy weapons, been using the long sword and it's really not fun to hit the same attacks 30 times before something dies.

Also, the counter on the longsword is literally useless if the enemies attack puts them behind you, it's really frustrating. Oh and when they move at the last second of your R2 combo and you waste a bunch of meter.

You know what, actually strawberry float the Long Sword

LS is considered one of the best weapons in the demo currently too lol. But it's not a super beginner friendly so I think it's just a matter of finding a weapon that suits you best first. These are monsters you fight countless times until you learn patterns to figure out how to efficiently hunt them more easily. Best advice I can give now is just try out other weapons.

I mained Hammer in world and could probably beat it with that but I'm just trying to learn a bladed weapon.

The trouble I have with longsword is you basically have to prep the counters and then half the time they can miss anyway.

Great Sword's shoulder charge for example is way more consistent, at least in my experience.

Plus I find it kind of annoying having to chase high mobility monsters around all the time with the lighter weapons. I find it more fun to wait for them to stop moving then get a few big hits in.

I'd say stick to GS and Hammer since it sounds like they suit your playstyle better. I mostly play DB myself since they're the most mobile weapon in the game and I like to find small opening windows to attack.
