Choose an easy to use weapon, sword and shied is ok. I like switch axe or dual blades.

If it's too tough then just hop into co op. All missions can be done with randoms and it's so much easier.

Visit different areas between hunts to stock up and upgrade.

Loads and loads of good build guides on YouTube. Well worth watching them but don't worry too much until you hit high rank.

Monsters don't have life bars but do get tired, run away and look beat up. So you know you're making a difference.

Do some exploring missions to collect stuff and get to know the world.

Any tips for someone entirely new to the whole franchise?

Take some time to try out different weapons, see which ones click with you
Also watch guides on youtube for literally anything you're unsure on

Also did Narwa yesterday, it was great. Possibly my favourite "set-piece" fight and the attack patterns were cool as hell.

There's a bastard of an initial learning curve. If you're ready for than and can ride it out you'll have a much better experience.

Haven't fought Chameleos since the PSP games so it was surreal going into this fight. Almost meeting an old friend, then remembering how annoying they were LOL. Almost failed my first solo quest because of him. Those venom attacks are brutal if you aren't quick to take care of it.

What dat? I had nothing after Teo/Level 40?

On page 3 of quests I got the apex rathian hunt unlocked. I think it unlocks at level 40 but not sure.

There's quest for Apex Rathian and Apex Mitz (but not Rathlos or Diablos it seems so far) but you have to do them in Rampage first

And the rampages you're offered vary.

And you can't seem to search for Rathian in the answer join requests so start it and hope someone is looking for random :D

I've got quests for apex arzuros, rathian and mizutsune unlocked now.

Got a new blast set made for dual blades. Works well so far and breaks parts fast.

I beat the 4 star village quests recently

It's really weird that they chose to put the credits after beating the flagship for this game, that's new to me.

Went online for the first time in this game as well, the guys I was playing with seemed really unfocused; they went for everything except for the target monster.

I mostly just need money now since everything is so dang expensive. First time I've ever been in this situation with MH lol. I guess there are ways to go around it like selling extra materials but I'm a hoarder in these kinda games >,>

Sort your box - after the various pieces of paper/tokens on last the page there will be various items that (e.g. eggs) that have no purposes except to be sold for cash

I check the rare items from the argosy after each quest for the ores from previous game locations - some of them sell for 10k each.

I also have geologist gemmed in, you can make a lot of money just selling spare ore in general.

Had some long train journeys this weekend so took the opportunity to put some more hours in on this, I've unlocked the 5* village urgent and almost got it for the hub too. I think this has done a far better job of modernising the series than World did, I get that it's mostly building on what world started but it somehow just feels a lot more like a "proper" monhun to me than world ever did.
Also, cool thing I realised Rise has that I can't remember seeing since MHFU are the arena quests set in hunting grounds rather than the arena, always liked those - nice to have the challenge of doing a full hunt with specific equipment sets rather than just the arena fights.

Arena quests give the sellable metal eggs as a reward I think, they might be a good shout for quick cash, the optional quests also have them sometimes. I do miss the thing 4U had where you could just fish for coinperch in Dundorma if you were ever short of money, thought that was a nice detail.

Played a few hours last night and Jesus you weren't kidding about the difficulty curve. Plus there's so much to take on board, there'd better be a wiki for this!

Felt like this the entire time.

Alright, I've sunk about 5 hours into this now and I'm starting to get the hang of things. I'm getting a grasp for the general rhythm of the game and the battles and the mechanics which means I can tell what's 'core' and what's 'strawberry float around and find out' type stuff. Solo'd my first couple of big monsters but damn it's tight for time isn't it? I figured that 50 minutes would give me plenty of time to explore, do some gathering etc but nope, you'd better be chasing that dickhead relentlessly if you want a shot.

Kinda annoying that you don't get a chance to explore the area you were hunting in after completing the quest. Feels like heading back to the village should be optional, at least up to the remaining time, rather than an automatic 1 min kickout.

EDIT; The Dual Blades make this game playable, they're so much more fun than that bloody sword.

Quests should be taking 10-20 minutes, so if you're running tight on time there is probably something relatively core you are missing with the weapon you are using. Damage can vary a lot depending on what part of a monster you are attacking so you want to make sure you are aiming for the weak points - learning monsters is all part of the game so don't feel like that's an upfront demand! Make sure you are paying attention to your weapon sharpness too.

You can go on expedition quests that have no time limit if you want to explore, and I'd recommend it in fact to help learn the maps! Large monsters will still appear on expeditions so you can hunt as much as you like with no pressure.

I think the thing I'm missing is making good use of the... weird Attack on Titan/Spiderman stringy things to get around the monster faster landing better hits.

strawberry floated up his shins though.

Wirebug moves are really useful not just because they are generally really good, but also because they do ride damage. Have you been riding the monsters at all?

You should be getting a ride on each monster you fight, and either launching them into multiple walls for some hefty damage followed by them being trapped for a bit while you whale on them, or if they are not the monster you are hunting using them to attack the monster you are hunting and building up to a mounted punisher. There is an optional tutorial that takes you through it all, just know that wirebug moves do ride damage and ride damage is recognisable from a blue flash - aerial attacks also do ride damage. (You can also charge one monster into another to do a load of ride damage, normally letting you switch to ride the monster you charged into, which can be good for switching from the target to another for doing some attacks and a mounted punisher).

The wirebugs and riding mechanics are all basically new for this game, although they are developed from several other mechanics from previous games.

So, I have been riding the monsters but I have no idea how to do it by design.

Basically, if two monsters have been fighting each other (letthemfight) it usually lets me mount either. If it's the one I'm trying to hunt I usually just launch him at the other guy for big damage. If it's not the monster I'm hunting I just spam heavy attack until I get the 'Punish him' prompt. But I only got the option to ride them when there's two big monsters fighting each other, can you do it when it's 1:1?

I can reliably predict when the option will be given to me, but no idea how to trigger it by design.

I'm enjoying it though, I can see there's a fuckton of stuff to dig into.
