To those playing this, did you play the first one? How does this compare?

I played the first but never finished it.

This is bigger, more polished and has a great story. It feels like a big release compared to the last one.

Played and finished the first game, this is very similar just more polished and spends less time having to introduce the concept of riders I guess.

Godzilla wrote:Love the mini ratha design. Super cute and not too bad in battle. I've poured my bottle caps into upgrades for him as I presume he'll be with me until the credits roll.

I just don't like the wings, they look like they've just been taken from a different monster design altogether and swapped onto a Rathalos. Some of that is my series familiarity talking but I much preferred the Rathalos in the first game.

Anyway my party is now 5/5 for riding actions plus Ratha so I am making peace with this

Cool, this is on my radar but probably for later this year/next year as I have a lot of big Switch games to get through still plus I would like to play through the first Stories game beforehand.

My son is playing this; it's good fun so far, but have had to help him out a couple of times in the battles. Tougher than you'd expect at start of game. He's loving catching the Monsties.

BTW, after the latest update, the Palamute from Rise is available free by doing a co-op mission. Haven't got as far as doing co-op missions as yet. I think they unlock in later towns?

Yep, I've only just unlocked them at the fourth town - which is like 30 hours in if you're playing completionist on all the side quests like me.

It's definitely got a bit of difficulty to it at times, the trick is remembering the attack types of all the monsters (and what they change to) because the game will not do that for you! It's good fun though, I don't think it's overly difficult (although I'm sure for younger children it gets harder) but it's enough to be engaging. Later monsties being straight up better means it's not just sticking with one team throughout either, there is good incentive to bring new monsties up to level and swap them in. I think it works better than Pokemon.

I'm about 35 hours in now (including 7 from the demo) and it's showing no signs of nearing an end yet, so it's definitely a JRPG!

I keep seeing Godzilla playing this on my friend's list as well as Tsunade. Not sure how big a JRPG contingent we have on here but it deserves the attention I think.

This game is brilliant!

Just a relaxing and very deep RPG that can be accessible and chilled as you want or super complex and min maxing focused.

I've got eggs from the first two royal monsters after a lot of back tracking and a bit of grinding. I've now unlocked a second expedition team and I've got my team to around level 25.

My Rath is really good and the story is really picking up emotionally. The cut scenes are very well done and I love how my armour changes in the cut scenes.

I've only just unlocked multiplayer because I keep venturing off into dens and everdens to get more eggs. Soon I'll need to find another everden to get myself some more bottle caps for expansion of the stable!

I started using a Blue Yian Kut-Ku earlier today, whom I nicknamed Bubba and the first time I used the kinship attack with him I just couldn't stop laughing!

My team is around 15 at the moment, with a nargacuga I'm raising at 12. All in all I think I'm just taking my time, avoiding jaggi as I go!

Kinship cut scenes have so much character. I've managed to get myself a tigrex great sword, hammer and armour. It's making a difference in battles and looks great too.

I've done a couple of online quests. They are ok but not as dynamic and exiting as MHR but that is to be expected.

I haven't seen any tigrex yet except for the one from that cutscene so far but I'm sure I'm about to. At the moment I have rathian armor on and I'm carrying a raven torrent (hammer), bone tomahawk, and bone Gunlance. Definitely need better weapons but I'm doing okay at the moment.

I have the cornpopper gunlance and its just about becoming obsolete, which upsets me greatly. I love my giant corn.

Got a lot further today. Had an amazing cut scene which was really moving and ends brilliantly. My team is still largely very early monsters but I am getting more later monsters to train up via expeditions.

Difficulty is stepping up but it's never annoying which is good for me. I'm currently back tracking a bit to do the countless side quests I've been ignoring and to look for special dens.

Me and my mate did a couple of co op quests this evening, it was quite fun. Mind, we could only do quests I'd unlocked as he's already completed the main story and I've only just got to the snow village. I need to find the meylynx (can't remember the spelling of it) in town to expand my stables again, and I need to stop egg hunting when my egg box is almost full before hatching my monsties

We're on Spark of Disaster at the mo and I think I need to go level up a bit for my son. He's been skipping all the side stuff and powering through the story. His Monsties are level 12 and he just keeps getting knocked out before the first break. Both really enjoying it though!

Yeah you're probably a few levels under, I'd suggest doing some of the side quests as you get decent xp rewards for completing them.

That was damn quick! Do you know how many hours?

I've just hit 5* and got myself a palamute. About 45 hours in now, doing the side quests as I go.

End of 4* spoilers: Rathalos getting proper wings and then unlocking flight was great!

I think he said he completed it in 55 hours, but that was with skipping dialogue and not bothering with side quests.

I'm currently using my team of newbies and Ratha. All are coming up to level 40. Got my eye on some XL skills that unlock at level 30 with some Monsties so I'm sending them on expeditions before sacrificing them to make Ratha have a XL super powered fire beam of doom.

Managed to save 160 bottle caps which I'm keeping for long term unlocks like stable size and expeditions.

I think I'm coming towards the final of the game as doing a few bits that feels like it's building to the big bad. Still a huge amount of sub quests to do and a lot of eggs to find too.

Easily the best switch game I've played in ages and a game that has made turn based battles fun. It's even got me thinking about buying other turn based RPGs.

I'm guessing you're ahead of me zilla as I'm level 33 and just got Kyle as my buddy. Annoyingly found out I have missed one of Tsukino's disguises but I looked it up and you can get them in the post-game, so it's not a permanent missed thing luckily!

My current team:

Ratha
Purple Ludroth
Blue Yian Kut-Ku
Ruby Basarios
Tigrex
Palamute

I'm glad for the Palamute as it has both ivy climb and jump as riding actions. That makes my Tigrex superfluous as I don't need his ivy climb but he is one of my strongest (with my best bingos going on) so I haven't swapped him out yet. At some point I need to swap Black Gravios in though for the lava swim riding action.

And finished, brilliant game.

Total play time (including demo) 60 hours 27 minutes.

Really well animated cut scenes, voice acting and design. It has a huge amount of Nintendo style charm and character.

Very highly recommend for fans of Monster Hunter and Pokémon.

Wikipedia only mentions Switch & Windows, is this coming to Playstation later? Looks very fun.
