Yeah I’d go with this. Remember some village but thats about it. Oh and the endless secrets.

Such a shame

I've played neither but I thought Wilds was the completely remarkable one and Worlds was the other?

How about Dragon Age Inquisition? I remember that even being given GOTY awards from some places, but haven't heard anyone talk about it since.

strawberry floats sake, you're right. Worlds was completely unremarkable, I didn't get on with Wilds but I can see how impressive it was

I enjoyed World's, it didn't stand out in any specific area but it was a nice ride and scratched a particular itch

Taf continually confusing the two games despite being one of the few people to actually play both will never stop being funny to me :P

I wouldn't call Outer Worlds forgettable or unremarkable. It delivers pretty much exactly on what it promised and I do think the companion quests stand out for the characters involved. Mostly though there just aren't that many comparable games out there.

I found the outer worlds really disappointing. It started out looking like fallout in space, but I spent most of the game waiting for it to open up and become that, but it was all empty cut and paste rooms and blocked off buildings. Yes the quests were well written, but if the game they're in is empty and clearly restricted by time and budget, those quests may as well have been put in a text based point and click game.

Aye, there is that. It was marketed as "more Fallout 3/New Vegas but in space" and was indeed that. But I still feel it was eminently forgettable because of its ponderous game feel and uninspired writing (minus the Parvati character who was amazing).

And honestly who makes two games with similar names and release dates like like? Awful.

Evolve was a weird one. I didn't think it looked or sounded to fun. Games journalists that played it under controlled conditions with each other at E3 and whatever other events were absolutely raving about it and it was getting a lot of "Best of Show" awards.

Played the demo, didn't think it was that fun.

Game bombed.

Evolve seemed to be huge for a couple of months and then just disappeared. There seemed to be loads of people raving about it on Reddit when it first came out, but then it just disappeared and there were a couple of attempts to bring it back but it didn't work. It seemed more that the dickish ways they were trying to monetise it just didn't work.

Yep, Evolve's pre-order bonuses killed it dead. Unique cosmetics are one thing, but if I recall correctly several of the (rather small) roster of monsters were exclusive to certain retailers, as were several player characters? There was basically no possible way to buy the whole game at launch.

Also apparently the core gameplay loop simply didn't work with the monster player always having a huge advantage.

I played Evolve with a couple of friends when it was like £4 and it did actually seem like there was a fun game there, but it was absolutely hamstrung by the lack of variety in monsters - as I recall the way they monetised it and had pre-order bonuses basically stripped all of the monster variation out of the base game. That's half the game removed. Given the roster it really needed all of the monsters playable by everyone.

Absolutely top-tier logo design though. I'll give the game that

I think if anyone went in wanting a more open sandbox RPG they would be disappointed. It's definitely more story focused than Fallout (and linear in the sense of progression, even though you the quest design and overall structure is notably non-linear), and being split into small hubs definitely contributes to that. Where it very much is like New Vegas is in the quest design and the minute-to-minute gameplay.

The budget/time constraints are obvious as you say, especially as you progress into the later game areas (or if you take the side of the board and get to those areas earlier).

I don't know if I've ever even heard of Evolve in the first place, or if it really is so forgettable that I immediately expunged it from my mind!

I remember it being pretty fun the first time I played it, then on the next few plays I was getting gooseberry fool from peoplefor being a certain class of character and daring to do something outside of what it's role is. I think someone sent me a shitty message for shooting the monster while being a medic.. "that's not your role, learn to play" or similar. God forbid I try to find out what the game is about on my own or just do something I want to do. I played as the monster once, which was kind of fun, but you're on your own so it's just you moving about a level trying not to get shot.

I do remember there being DLC which seems to have a lot of content shut behind it. The game felt so bare bones.

It helped stop asymmetric multiplayer from really taking off :(

Surprisingly it wasn't on WiiU, given the above

It's interesting that the microtransactions were so visibly exploitative because they did they decent thing of letting you just buy the thing you want with a clear real-world price. Yeah those prices are way over the top, but they are probably pretty comparable to average costs from loot boxes for cosmetics - and much better if you want a specific skin. Titanfall 2 had a similar microtransaction model (with better prices iirc, I actually bought an avatar pack in that) and yeah, basically when games are upfront about the cost and not obscuring things with in game currency conversion or loot boxes it actually turns people off.

Of course making the monsters expensive DLC was straight-up madness.

That video mentions the main gameplay criticism too which was running around the map trying to find the monster (which definitely was a problem when I played it). Probably if the game was made now they'd just scatter loot around and people would be happy - running around the map out of combat is 90% of battle royale games like fortnite or apex.

I think it's easy to see how journalists were positive about the game when they were demoing it with content that would later be ripped out as DLC.

Most games that released in 2014, you know it was a crap year when Dragon Age won many game of the year awards and yet no one talks about it.

Late to the Prey discourse, but as a once-stan of that game I always felt it had a weirdly flat/awkward energy to all of its presentation (culminating in that strawberry floating ending), so I don't blame people for finding it forgettable. Doubly so if you played the PS4 version, which to this day has the worst input lag I've seen in a major console release.

Tangentially, Avellone worked on that game, and him turning out to be a turd while that game has a out-of-nowhere bit about someone convicted of soliciting a minor as part of a moral choice (releasing him on sight is the "good" choice) always seemed distinctly Avellone's brand of edgy and is now *exponentially* more uncomfortable, and that sorta clinched me being done with that game despite all its neat ideas.
