I do have one question, and it's one that's been bothering me since the very first video Roon posted.

Is Vermilion pronounced as "Ver-million" or "Vermy-lion"? I've always assumed the first but Roon has me unsure now.

I demand answers!

I've always pronounced it as the first one, but i don't mind either being used.

Anyhow...

Great game Roonmaster, thanks for running it, i hope to be able to defend my title soon (and i want No.1 on my car, though i've no idea if that's even a thing in this game).

The images of a Lion swayed my pronunciation. I'll see what I can do about that number 1.

You know, I nearly made a thread about forum identity pronunciation. There's a few that always make me wonder.

Skarjo? Do you pronounce the J or is it a Y sound?
Cora? As in Corrah or Coar-a?
Tsunade? Rhymes with tsunami? Or "sun-aid"?
Jawa? Long or short vowels?
&c.

EDIT - thank you for running this Roonmastor, was great entertainment!

I've really enjoyed pulling this together, and hopefully some of you have had some fun following it during the summer break in the racing season. If I run this again, it'll probably be after the F1 season has finished in January, or in October/November if the season is effectively over and I have the time.

A few questions I have that your opinions would help on.

1) Are you happy with the season length and pacing?
7 races sat about right for me to complete the season in two weeks or so, which is probably the fastest I could really run it. Perhaps that pacing was too much to get a lot of interaction in the thread. The season could go up to 12 races over a month and that would probably be my absolute maximum in terms of length. But 8 races over a month might work better for peoples schedules. Of course, it can run slower over an extended period of time.

2) Are you happy with the race length?

Currently this is set to be as short as possible. I can set it to medium or long. I think the short runs work well as that means the highlights videos don't drag on, but you could argue that the short nature means whatever team I'm running I can miss strategy on. From the comments in the thread, I think it's fair that things probably move a bit too fast in short races, and I'm happy to increase the length. This is an initial set up option, so we'll want to be sure what we pick because I can't change it between seasons.

3) The Teams?
So I could edit the teams to name them after the actual F1 teams, or we could rename them to something new, or retain the current naming convention. The idea of having the teams named by people who 'run' them appeals, but there could be some bleed back to the original names/logos in places I can't amend in game. We could have team owners have some say over who drives in their team, livery colours, and vote on rule changes. Mind, no reason a team needs to be named after someone to do this. Higher interactions may necessitate a slower pace game or less races. It can also allow for some car customisation. I'm thinking of giving team owners a budget, allowing them to design a chassis, vote on rules and choose a designer from a mini-list.

If we keep things simple, did the performance balance seem reasonable between the GRcade Cup's cars?

4) Driver Input

So I allocated all the drivers to teams. I would like to actually get people to opt into the game and pick their own stats and traits. This would likely be a top two stats and bottom two stats and buying traits or further stats that make you better but more expensive for team managers to put in their team. If we were doing this, I'd probably have to limit the reporting down to a single series for my own sanity.

5) Number of series
I did all three series to increase the chances that forumites were included, and also to spread the level of participation required between highlights and looking at some images. Did people like following three concurrently, or was the main series sufficient for interest? I don't want to add workload if it isn't being valued. I guess this is the place to probably also ask if live streaming or pre-records are the way to go. I've chopped and changed this time round to get a feel for it, and I'm happy either way. Streaming is fastest, but has its risks.

6) Race rules
I can tweak the race rules as the game progresses but the one I'm interested in most is refueling (GRcup did not have refueling which limited strategy divergence) and also points distribution. Asia Supercup's 6 position scoring is naff, but I quite like the Euro points for every position. We can keep the F1 10 places, look at 8 places, and I think 12 places will probably exist in the game (I'll have to check).

7) Seasons
So I won't continue this continuity of the game, unless there are overwhelming requests for it. The main reason being I can't implement some of the above stuff without breaking the current game. I can't reverse retirements, and I think people are reluctant to bump other people out of seats even though they may want to play. But the idea of having a racing continuity that can have 3 or 4 seasons could be quite fun. If people want this continuity to continue then let me know and I'll attempt it until something we want won't work. What I will do though, if this continuity isn't continued, is roll the season forward to see what happens in the in-game driver market as an epilogue of sorts. And we'll keep Vermilion as the reigning Champion in a new continuity.

8) My team
Being the player allowed me some advantage this season, probably linked to Chariot's Designer being massively OP once some of my other balance changes were applied. Would you want me to follow one team throughout the season, or jump between teams each race to keep me team agnostic. Not sure how game breaking that might be, but that would probably be my preference. Doing this might mean I need to be more active in race management. Alternatively, do you want me to follow one team and be more active in its management to try and help it get to the front?

Ultimately I'll make my own mind up as I need to be engaged to actually pull this all together, but there isn't much point in pulling together something there isn't enough demand for. So throw your opinions at me!

Posted my response in the F1 thread, but this is a more appropriate place for it.

The length and frequency of races was spot on. I liked that we weren't waiting ages between rounds. That said, more races and a longer season wouldn't hurt it for me.

2) Are you happy with the race length?
Currently this is set to be as short as possible. I can set it to medium or long. I think the short runs work well as that means the highlights videos don't drag on, but you could argue that the short nature means whatever team I'm running I can miss strategy on. This is an initial set up option, so we'll want to be sure what we pick because I can't change it between seasons.

Again, I think the length works well as it is. 20-25 minutes per race means it's not a huge chore to watch.

3) The Teams?
So I could edit the teams to name them after the actual F1 teams, or we could rename them to something new, or retain the current naming convention. The idea of having the teams named by people who 'run' them appeals, but there could be some bleed back to the original names/logos in places I can't amend in game. I've got no opinion on this either way, so if people want to mess about with the team names, colours, liveries etc, then that's fine with me. The only downside is that it potentially makes it harder to see which team they've been based on (E.g Scuderia Rossini was clearly Ferrari), but that's about it.

Power balance seemed ok as far as I can tell. But I came 2nd so I might be a bit biased there.

Not a bad idea. I will admit I did like the "hands-off" part of this where I was just watching. If we had to start making decisions I think it'll make things harder for you to run and I'm more likely to screw things up

It's really what works best for you to be honest. Streaming is great because it allows us to catch it as it happens, but ultimately it's a decision for you to take.

Again, I'm happy enough with the rules as they currently are.

7) Seasons
So I won't continue this continuity of the game, unless there are overwhelming requests for it. The main reason being I can't implement some of the above stuff without breaking the current game. I can't reverse retirements, and I think people are reluctant to bump other people out of seats even though they may want to play. What I will do though, if this continuity isn't continued, is roll the season forward to see what happens in the in-game driver market as an epilogue of sorts. And we'll keep Vermilion as the reigning Champion in a new continuity.

I'm biased here since I did quite well, but I would like to continue on with the line-up we currently have. But if everyone else wants to wipe clean then that's cool.

It might be interesting to have the team that comes last in a given race get your attention in the next race? Kind like how teams in F1 get more wind-tunnel time for development the lower in the order they end up. That way teams that might benefit the most from a guiding hand get it?

Ultimately I'll make my own mind up as I need to be engaged to actually pull this all together, but there isn't much point in pulling together something there isn't enough demand for. So throw your opinions at me!

Semi-related, but F1 Manager 22 launches for people who pre-ordered from them on Thursday. Got my copy from CDkeys so I'll probably have to wait till the 30th to get that, but really looking forward to this. It'll be a nice change of pace compared to my usual games.

Motion capture looks really cool for the Pit teams.

I also didn't know that Fernando Alonso's main mechanic is called Jonny Goodenough.

Presumably Steve Adequate wasn't quite up to the job for Fernando and I doubt Alpine could afford Mikey Goat.

thanks for running, was fun

also good to be confirmed as the lando norris of the forum

i think the idea of buying and selling stats is good - you could also do a dnd style where for example if there are 8 fields of 10 points then give the players a 60 points to assign how they like etc

Well at least I got better as the season went on! Can we expect a second season when the F1 has finished for the winter? Or will you be too busy with F1 Manager

Just realised if myself and Ad did drive for effectively Mercedes then we finished on 77 and 44 points, Bottas and Hamilton’s race numbers  Unless its based on 2022 then it makes no sense

Thanks for running it, been a fun way to see out the summer break!

Expect a 2nd season back end of this year or early next year. I'll probably hold off on F1 Manager, now I'm getting new value out of this game.

For those of you with Motorsport Manager, you can now see if you can do better than Roon Mastor or Devlin's Strategy Team, and download the database as a game mod on Steam:
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/ ... 2852685049

For the next season, I've looked at jumping between teams but there doesn't seem to be an editor setting for that, so I'll probably have to stick with the same team.

Nice.

I've subbed to the mod so next time I play MM I'll check it out.

Anyone interested in F1 Manager 22 on PC can get it from CDkeys for £27.99 right now. Bargain.

Only just seen this (I got married the weekend it started, and then went away on minimoon).

Great stuff! Happily take my driver of the day award from race 2. I seemed to do much better in races than quali.

Definitely interested in another season with more input into strategy.

Congrats Satriales!

I've been playing in the database this week so have worked out how to do a season 2, but with the F1 Manager hype and release imminent, I'll either resurrect this thread or start a new one in a month or two to begin the new game set up.

For now, I'm thinking a slightly increased race length (currently short), and to depower the cars to make lap times a little slower. 7 races per season, with a view to do 3-5 seasons. I think I can pull this off in the current continuity.

Team Managers will have to pick chassis components, initial facilities, initial part upgrades and sign their own drivers. They may also be able to opt for certain designers or mechanics but I've not tested that yet. In season they can negotiate drivers to their teams (for sign on costs and current driver exit costs), and vote for next season's rule changes (not yet tested). I'll probably check in on teams to see how they are performing and action small individual events if teams are doing poorly, are in financial ruin (you might get ousted!), or have extra funds you want to spend on further upgrades. So relatively high in season inputs required.

Drivers will have to pick their own stats (and can buy more stats) and traits, which will determine their initial cost and per race cost to their team manager. You can also pick your driver number (1 for Vermilion). Team Managers can over pay for a driver, for example, due to a bidding war, but drivers can opt to agree to drive for any team that pays at least their base cost. Basically, standard wheeler dealer antics. Drivers can agree to move teams mid season if terms are agreed with a Team Manager, based on the current in game costs at that time or higher. You'll want to think about your contract length to trade flexibility to move up the order if you're doing well, against long term stability to make being replaced less attractive. Beyond that, you're the potential heroes but relatively low inputs required in season.

So for 10 managers and minimum 20 drivers we will need 30 sign ups. But no need to do so now, I'll share the sign up requirements closer to the time.

Yeah I think giving the players more input is the only real improvement I'd suggest. The videos were fun (and infuriating).
