Marvel Boss Talks Hulk Future

I know I'm not the only one who thinks Hulk was the greatest part of "Marvel's The Avengers," just as I'm not the only one disappointed that another "Hulk" solo film isn't anywhere on the immediate horizon. But who knows what the future holds after the "Avengers" sequel? In fact, with all signs pointing to Earth's mightiest heroes embracing the cosmic side of the Marvel Universe, is it possible that we might see a live-action "Planet Hulk" in the future? Is that something Marvel could pull off?

"I don't think there's a lot that we couldn't do someday, as the cinematic universe continues to grow and expand and get as big as the comic book universe," Marvel's Kevin Feige told me when I asked him if we'd ever see a movie based on "Planet Hulk," the Greg Pak-written epic that sees the Jade Giant as a rebel leader on an alien planet, "Gladiator" style.

"'Planet Hulk' is a cool story," he added. "'World War Hulk' is a cool story."

There are a few obstacles that Feige sees in the way of any possible Hulk-in-space solo films. "I think there's pitfalls of continuity-overload, and mythology getting so dense that it almost collapses in on itself," he said. "It happens every few decades or so in the comics. Apart from that, I'd say everything is on the table."

Even if "Planet Hulk" or something similar is possible, there's no such movie coming any time soon. "Do I think Hulk can carry a movie and be as entertaining as he was in 'Avengers'? I do believe that. I do believe he absolutely could. We certainly are not even going to attempt that until 'Avengers 2,'" said Feige. "So there's a lot of time to think about it."

"Part of what's fun about the way we played him in 'Avengers' is the ensemble quality of it," he continued of why Hulk resonated with so many fans this summer. "I think the pathos and humor, most importantly, that Mark and Joss brought to it showcased a different element of Hulk that's there in the comics, and was always inherent in his character. But when he was so brooding in his other two films, he didn't get to have that wry sense of humor that Mark did such an amazing job performing."

Despite his unlimited strength, Hulk just isn't a strong enough character to carry an entire film by himself.

Not true. I've seen him carry a tractor so he could easily carry an entire film.

Planet Hulk would be an excellent storyline for a Hulk film, the best way to do it imo would be with The Avengers 2, Hulk gets in such a rage even after having beaten the bad guy that he can't be calmed down and so some Thor based magic/tech sends Hulk off into a space as "he's too dangerous to be left to rage it out on Earth". The Avengers 2 post-credits clip ends with Hulk's destination being diverted, which we learn in Planet Hulk movie causes him to land on the planet where the Planet Hulk film starts.

I agree. The Hulk would probably better suited as a TV series.

Don't want a Planet Hulk movie. As others have said, he isn't strong enough to carry a film by himself plus the amount of CGI needed for that particular story would be pretty damn expensive. There's not really any need for another Hulk film anyway after the two recent-ish films and the potential TV show from Guillermo del Toro. There's plenty of other Marvel characters that deserve a movie instead.

This. There are plenty of other marvel characters to get round first. And never mind the chop and changing from the original story that would be required to do a Planet/World War Hulk movie/s considering it's so early in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

It was hardly a definite "this is where we are going with Hulk anyway" from Feige. Just him showing his appreciation for those stories.

This film has the best marketing campaign I've seen in ages. Even if it doesn't quite turn out to be a stone cold classic, they've done some job of making people think it's going to be.

Second song of the trailer is Baby Huey - Hard Times

My worry with a film with such a cast today is that they will rely entirely on the awesome cast and the story and actual film will suck monkey balls.

The names Pacino and De Niro used to be a stamp of quality, but today it usually means a by-the-numbers crime film with an unchallenging role and a big pay cheque. It's a sad state of affairs, but I can understand living in semi-retirement after the quality work both have been a part of.

Mark Millar Given The “Joss Whedon Role” Over Fox’s Marvel Movies

Following Marvel’s lead in giving Joss Whedon on over-all consultancy role for their movie making endeavours, Fox have done the same with Mark Millar and their Marvel movies. At the moment this entails The Wolverine, X-Men: Days of Future Past and Fantastic Four, but it’s bound not to end there.

Here’s Millar’s statement:

As someone who has spent his entire life obsessed with both comic-books and movies, this is essentially my dream gig as it’s a unique combination of both.

I spent ten years working at Marvel and am really happy with the work I did on the comic side of things so the idea of working with these characters now in a brand new medium is enormously exciting for me. I really like the Fox team, love this bold new direction they have for their franchises and am proud to be working alongside some of modern cinema’s biggest talents.

James Mangold is incredible, Matthew Vaughn’s one of my closest pals and Josh Trank gave us, in my opinion, one of the greatest superhero movies of the last decade with Chronicle. The invitation to join this crew was maybe the coolest phone-call I’ve ever had.

Now we’ll never see Miracle Park, eh?

Note: that’s the first official word from Fox that Trank is in charge of The Fantastic Four.

You know, it does seem a bit unfortunate that Millar cohort Joe Carnahan saw his Daredevil film hit the wall at Fox recently.

It’s not clear if the plan is to work up inter-related elements and crossovers, as per the Avengers initiative, but the press release says:

Millar will work with Fox on developing new avenues for its X-Men and Fantastic Four tentpoles.

What will that mean? Slightly less obvious spin-offs, maybe, like a proper, stand-alone Silver Surfer film, or something New Mutants-y? Or maybe cartoons, film-universe comics, videogames… something properly ancillary. Time will tell, but I bet Millar starts dropping hints as soon as he can…

Good move imo. First official confirmation that Trank is on FF duty as well.
