‘It’s a Wonderful Life’ Sequel in the Works

Star Partners and Hummingbird Prods. are collaborating on production of a sequel to Frank Capra’s iconic 1946 movie “It’s a Wonderful Life,” which starred Jimmy Stewart and Donna Reed.

The sequel, titled “It’s A Wonderful Life: The Rest of the Story,” is being financed by Allen J. Schwalb of Star Partners who will also produce along with Bob Farnsworth of Hummingbird. The duo are aiming to get the movie into theaters for the 2015 holiday season.

Karolyn Grimes, who played George Bailey’s daughter “Zuzu” in the original, will return for the “Wonderful Life” sequel as an angel who shows Bailey’s unlikeable grandson (also named George Bailey) how much better off the world would have been had he never been born.

Grimes, of course, bellowed the iconic line, “Every time a bell rings, an angel gets his wings!” in the original movie, about a troubled family man (Stewart) whose near-suicide on Christmas Eve brings on the intervention of his guardian angel.

“The storyline of the new film retains the spirit of the original – every life is important as long as you have friends,” Farnsworth said.

No casting decision for the lead role of Bailey’s grandson will be made until February but producers have also begun discussions with original cast members Jimmy Hawkins, who portrayed Tommy Bailey, and Carol Coombs, who played Janie Bailey, to reprise their roles as well.

“The new film will retain the feeling of the original, and it simply must be shared,” Grimes said. “I’ve probably read close to 20 scripts over the years suggesting a sequel to ‘It’s a Wonderful Life,’ but none of them were any good. The script by Bob Farnsworth and Martha Bolton was wonderful, and I wanted to be involved with his version of the film immediately.”

Terry Gilliam Says His Next Project is 'The Man Who Killed Don Quixote'

Following a festival-opening screening of the director's latest, The Zero Theorem, we caught up with Terry Gilliam at the Camerimage Festival of the Art of Cinematography in Bydgoszcz, Poland. We'll have the full interview posted shortly, but Gilliam did deliver some exciting news that we wanted to share right away. He says that his next film will finally be (he hopes) his long-awaited Miguel de Cervantes adaptation The Man Who Killed Don Quixote.

"I'm going to try to do 'Don Quixote' again," Gilliam responded when asked about what he's working on now. "I think this is the seventh time. Lucky seven, maybe. We'll see if it happens. This is kind of my default position, going back to that. I actually just want to make it and get rid of it. Get it out of my life."

Production on Gilliam's The Man Who Killed Don Quixote actually began in 2000 with Jean Rochefort as Quixote and Johnny Depp in the role of Sancho Panza. Unfortunately, the shoot met with dilemma after dilemma and was never finished, although the behind-the-scenes of the troubled production did end up becoming a feature-length documentary, Lost in La Mancha, in 2002.

Gilliam's new hope for the project is a welcome reversal of his thoughts in August when he told Deadline that he was just about ready to throw in the towel on the project.

"I don't know if it will be good or bad," Gilliam now says with a smile. "The dangerous thing is that a lot of people are waiting for it, so I can disappoint a lot of people maybe."

Other attempts at bringing the project to the big screen have involved Robert Duvall as Quixote and Ewan McGregor as the Sancho Panza. There's currently no word as to which cast members might be involved this time around, but Gilliam seems cautiously optimistic that he might finally bring his impossible dream to life.

After what happened last time, kudos to Gilliam for giving it another go.

Hollywood. :fp:

No major studio means it will likely be a straight-to-DVD or limited run film made on the cheap with it's name being its only hope of any marginal success.

"Hey you, aye you, you're an awful banana split and Christmas will be so much better if you kill yourself, you miserable ugly bastard. No-one loves you - not even the angels - now do humanity a favour and end your pointless existence before you ruin someone else's day, you fat strawberry floating bully."

Christmas. I'm all warm and fuzzy inside.
