Interesting article.

Very interesting and definitely something we have noticed and been frustrated by a lot. We end up using subtitles quite often.

Good read, and explains a lot. I'm really sick of the sound in modern films, and the over use of music in nearly every scene on top of dialogue is incredibly grating. It rarely adds anything other than a distraction. Sound issues plus newer TV's often having pretty poor sound means I have to use subtitles quite a lot.

I’ve started attending subtitled showings at the cinema in the last 3 years or so, and you’d think ‘there’s gonna be me and 2 other people there’ but they’re definitely getting busier. It’s a shame then that the cinema chains support subtitled screenings so badly, meaning that hard of hearing people really miss out on the cinema experience.

There's tough competition, but perhaps nothing illustrates the vapid, IP-driven state of Hollywood right now than the news that the director of an upcoming House Party remake has already been announced as the director of an upcoming White Men Can't Jump remake.

The problem I have with sound in movies is the massive gulf in volume between dialogue vs. action. I have to turn it right up to be able to hear what they're saying and then BOOM THERE'S AN EXPLOSION AND THE NEIGHBOURS ARE PROBABLY PISSED OFF NOW.

Are you trying to push a 5.1 audio signal through tv speakers? The centre channel is usually the dialogue and it always seems to be too low in the mix for me.

If you're using a soundbar there might be an option in settings for 'night mode' or something similar that will limit the volume of big explosions and focus on dialogue.

I left it to run out because I wasn’t going, I have to go to very specific cinemas because of my disability, entering from the back so I don’t have to climb handrail-free steps.
BUT I renewed that bad boy yesterday to book Spider-Man tickets, yessssirrr! Odeon Lux in Durham.

Thanks for the feedback. I have a HDTV that's about 10 years old. I use stereo speakers plugged into the headphone socket. I'll have a go at fiddling with the settings. I was wondering about soundbars too, maybe I'll have a look at them.

Usually I complain that a trailer gives too much away, but in this case it's because this seems to have the exact same scenes and set pieces as the original Matrix we've all seen. Perhaps Lana is poking fun at the reverence of recent reboots/sequels and going meta....? I hope so. This isn't doing anything for me, sorry.

Yea, I don't really give a monkeys about this. The Matrix is still a time capsule of a movie that perfectly captured a very particular flavour of the late 90s zeitgeist, and was then followed by two gooseberry fool sequels that didn't understand or care what made the original so good (not exactly helped by them being released of opposite sides of 9/11 which made the 'strawberry float the system' message get reworked and mutilated until nonsensical). I'm trying to go into this relatively dark but unless it gets glowing reviews I'll probably miss it.

Another amazing trailer for The Matrix but I'm still worried it's just going to be the best bits of the original repackaged in a less than great film. Like Ghostbusters Afterlife. I'd love to see it on my birthday but I'll only bother if it's both very good and is also doing something interesting with the story. I don't want a cheap nostalgia trip because I can watch the original masterpiece if that's all this new film is.

I think there's a chance the new Matrix will take the story in an interesting direction. Will see it at the cinema for sure!

I'm not going to watch the trailer. Hoping to go in without seeing anything more than the teaser from the other week.

Can't wait

I've read some great theories about how the story could play out, I think my favourite one so far is that Neo is in his own special version of The Matrix, which was constructed by the Machines to house him and keep his powers suppressed. He's had his memory wiped and everyone in his world is just an AI, including Trinity. But as he's The One, he still get glimmers of his memories when he dreams and eventually figures out that he has to break free.

I'm not sure how that plays out with regards to Morpheus (I actually think the new young Morpheus is possibly an Agent) and potentially Agent Smith, but all will become clear in the fullness of time and I can't strawberry floating wait to find out. The Matrix trilogy, even with the parts 2 and 3 not being quite as magical as that lightning-in-a-bottle first film, is still top tier science fiction when it comes to the concept and visual and audio designs. It's a real shame that Don Davis isn't returning to do the music because that man knew how to create an entirely unique sound that suited the films down to the ground. When you can hear the associated sound of a film in your head when thinking about it, you know it's got a good audioscape :datass:

This could very easily turn out to be a disappointment (probably more likely than not in this day and age), but the trailers have given me massive hope and hype and I'm just glad to be able to have the chance to visit the world of The Matrix again, I thought that time had passed, like code down the screen.
