I’m still a little confused by the new suicide squad. Is it ignoring the previous film or is it a sequel but Amanda Waller has just chosen to only use Harley Quinn again and just pair her with a different set of characters? So the characters in the original would still exist in this films universe and just aren’t being called upon.

From what I understand, WB didn't intend on doing this - or even making another Suicide Squad movie, period. When they brought James Gunn on board, WB gave him access to their entire vault of IP pertaining to DC. James Gunn chose Suicide Squad (which imo was the perfect fit, especially after what he achieved with GotG) and this is the result.

As for the trailer, I'm not as pumped as I was for the original but I'm sure this'll be an entertaining, and moreover better film overall.

Halloween 2018, Halloween Kills and Halloween Ends which is out next year are all set on the same night. In the new continuity Myers was imprisoned from the end of the first Halloween movie until 2018.
