Marvel films are the golden goose though, and there hasn't been one for ages. I reckon they'll sit on it.

Good news for subscribers. Wonder Woman 1984 will be the first movie shown in 4K on HBO Max.

This feels huge. Not sure what to make of it really: I love going to the cinema, but if WB can make this work financially I don't see how this doesn't spell the beginning of the end.

Yep that's the death of the cinema right there. Or at least for a decade or so when some Silicon Valley techbro organically reinvents it.

If they get good numbers on Wonder Woman I can see Disney giving steaming another go.

It is the death of the current cinema model. They will need to downsize the number of cinemas and focus on bigger releases only.

Following the one-month HBO Max streaming run, all films will continue to play exclusively in theaters “with all customary distribution windows applying to the title.”

Warner Bros. has the following films included on its 2021 slate for now (release dates could change, of course): “The Little Things,” “Judas and the Black Messiah,” “Tom & Jerry,” “Godzilla vs. Kong,” “Mortal Kombat,” “Those Who Wish Me Dead,” “The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It,” “In The Heights,” “Space Jam: A New Legacy,” “The Suicide Squad,” “Reminiscence,” “Malignant,” “Dune,” “The Many Saints of Newark,” “King Richard,” “Cry Macho,” and “Matrix 4.”

I wonder how it will work with Sky, maybe you can rent them for only the 1st month.

I honestly don’t know how I feel about this.

If Sky does nab the Wonder Woman rights then that’s bad news for me as Sky never put subtitles up on their rental/sales stores at all.

Really? That's bloody stupid of them :fp: .
The terrestrial channels are told to have them on everything as far as I know and rightly so.
It surely can't be expensive these days to add them.

PostRe: Movie News/Discussion Thread 2 - All Warner 2021 Films going to HBO Max, bye Cinema :(

It’s crap for cinemas but I don’t think it’s the death for the model at all. It’s the parent company more than Warner making the decision but they’ve been emphatic that it’s only 12 months.

Golden goose for them is the HBO streaming service isn’t doing that well it’s well behind I think the competitors so it should help.

With cinemas closed till summer (NY/LA probably which is the big American market) in some form of lockdown and potential closures I kind of see it.

Warner makes all the money here either streaming or cinema. If the world gets sorted sooner they make more money if not there’s a fall back.

At least it’s still out at the cinema. And then cinema exclusive till the media release helps.

They’ve not said anything about internationally, I believe Canada expects cinema only, and Europe currently. But will that stick?

Wonder Woman 84 is going to VOD after a month of release in the U.K. so that’s probably Sky Store or something.

They can’t make the same revenue from streaming as they do box office
