Pascal was the best thing in that, and any other DC movie.

It was still terrible, however.

I mean depending on how formulaic you want your formulas to be I don't see that many modern Hollywood action movie really differ from the standard mould these days - the MCU is not really unique in following a well trodden path.

The difference is that more often than not they do a very good job of it

The Green Knight looks good, and that final scene of the trailer gives me Dark Souls vibes.

Also like that Sean Harris and Joel Edgerton are doing medieval again, they were both great in The King.

But the Marvel films have a very specific formula they rarely break from. Even the outliers like GoTG and Thor Ragnarok follow it. It's why I'm so bored with them all, tbh and why Venom was such a breath of fresh air. It wasn't afraid to get strawberry floating weird*, even if it was utter nonsense.

*Tom Hardy suddenly deciding on set he wanted to get into the lobster tank, then them writing it into the script par example.

I don't know whether I even have a point here to be fair!

Either the Hollywood formulas in general are so trite to me now that it all blurs together or I lack the sophistication to discern the actual differences between them, but for me the MCU movies are no more or less formulaic than anything else that has been coming out of the big studios for the last 10+ years

I like Venom but mainly because it felt retro. It felt like what superhero movies were back in the late 90s in the Spawn/Blade etc era.

Conclusion: the majority of big budget Hollywood actions films follow very similar formulas. Big money doesn't want to take big risk.

Personally, I'm not overly bothered by this, a) because if they're made well, I very much enjoy them and b) there is so much film easily available to us, it doesn't take a huge amount of effort to find variety to supplement the blockbusters.

But they're so strawberry floating boring though :(

Like Jen, I don't really have a point here other than the fact that Venom was ace.

So does that mean it'll be a superhero film where he fails miserably in a time loop style story before going "Sod this!" and giving up?

I think that's why I liked Venom too.

Spawn and Blade are also great 'gooseberry fool' films.

They may as well cancel next years Oscars as it's a forgone conclusion that Resident Evil: Welcome to racoon city will be the film of the year and win all the awards.

A Quiet Place 2 is reviewing well.

Quite fancy going to the cinema for that. The first was a better experience for seeing it that way IMO.

I can't remember whether it was A Quiet Place or the one silent bit in Last Jedi but there was a supposedly silent scene which was ruined for me in a cinema because someone had left the connecting projector room door open and we could all hear the movie next door.
