Joker trailer is weird.

It’s not what I expected. But it does look dark and sinister.

It may receive good reviews but I got the feeling it’ll bomb at the box office, and achieve cult status later on.

That looks terrible. I'm consistently amazed by Tilda Swinton, an amazing actress of Scottish heritage*, lives in the Highlands and yet singularly unable to convincingly put on a Scottish accent.

The full trailer for The Lion King live action movie. The animation for Simba and some of the other animals is amazing for looking almost lifelike and conveying emotions. James Earl Jones and the sunsets. It all actually gave me a little bit of chills.

Shame it's a movie utterly bereft of ambition, and from the trailer, seems to be following the original movie beat by beat. Perhaps adding "real" animals brings something to the movie, but it probably isn't going to be counterbalance the absence of Jeremy Irons as Scar.

Such an easy movie to make to simply watch cash roll in. You don't need much of a script or direction, as it's all been done already.

It's arguable how much of a "real life" version you're watching too, given the amount of CGI.

That trailer reminds me, strangely enough, of the gaming trend towards photo-realism that the industry was obsessed with back in the early 2000s. Style and aesthetics were largely put on the back burner whilst developers strove to have the most realistic graphics rather than the most interesting game.

This films looks to eschew all the stylistic trappings of the original and replace them with photo-realism, completely missing the point of the original. The story there was told not just through the writing but the imagery and by stripping one away for the sake of newness leaves you with half a concept.

Such a strawberry floating shame this is the direction Disney is going in, but as Parksey says it's the path of least resistance.

Trailer does look pretty dull. Only Disney live action thing I'd be interested in is Lilo and Stitch.

The Lion King is a great movie so I'm sure something that follows the same structure won't go too far wrong, but it seems entirely pointless to be doing this.

How are they going to handle some of the more unique visual sequences from the original movie? I Just Can't Wait to be King for example switches the style of the original movie up to be more abstract than the rest, not sure how well that will transfer to "live action"

In the late 90s early 2000s the then Disney head decided to make sequels to some of their classic animated movies which saw the unnecessary release of Cinderella II, Lady and the Tramp 2, Pocahontas 2, Lion King 2 etc. Apparently a couple were okay, but the rest were turgid cash-ins. Evidently Disney have made the decision to do this with turning their classic films into live action but now we have three coming being released this year. Dumbo, Aladdin and the Lion King. I'm not running the company but if I was I would have at least spread them out a bit, maybe one a year. The Lion King, unlike Aladdin, looks like it's using real landscape footage and may have two new songs so if the reviews are great I might go and see this one.

For sure the cast aren't real, better to think of it as 'simulated real'

But for the live action remakes, especially of films that already have broadway adaptations, you don't need new songs.

There won't be anything close to that in the new one. The new songs for Beauty and the Beast (with the exception of maybe Evermore) were all forgettable. And reviews for Dumbo seem to say they did exactly what they did with Beauty and the Beast, and bogged it down with unneccessary newly invented backstories that no-one ever asked for. I'm very much in the camp of "I'll probably download it, but never really watch it"
