I loved Avatar, and am really looking forward to the new one.

It's a shame 3D was dropped from TV's too, as pretty much all new sets no longer feature it (i was sad to lose that function when i had to replace my 2012 vintage Samsung).

Watching Gravity on 3D Blu Ray was really something.

I mean I watched the teaser too but I'm never going to watch the film. Haven't watched the first either.

I have to admit that South Park has ruined James Cameron for me.

Can't take him seriously at all now.

I could never see past Kermode describing it as Smurfahontis, kind of ruined it for me.

Sure the story is derivative (although still very enjoyable IMO), but the world Cameron created and the technological leaps that were made to produce it means that for me it's still a very special film.

Coming across as an Avatar superfan here, I need to be careful :slol:

I've never once rewatched it. Technically impressive, but it's a bit of an empty shell of a film.

Perhaps he'll swallow his pride a bit and get some help with the characters and story for this one.

The original Avatar is a movie I went to see on release with all the hype surrounding it, and then, until recently, forgot it even existed.

Insane reviews for Top Gun Maverick. 100% on Rotten Tomatoes after 44 reviews. The new Paddington 2?

I think it being an empty shell of a film was pretty deliberate. The story and characters were simple so it didn't run the risk of putting anyone off. It went to each international market and cleaned up and I'm not sure if it would have done to such a degree if he's spent more time on the character and story, it was the snazzy 3D effects people wanted to see. Cameron knows the box office better than anyone, it's pretty crazy that he made the highest grossing film of all time on a brand new IP when you think about it.

Of course, the flipside of this is it has had no lasting culture impact because everyone's forgotten about it. And while it's been long enough that I think he can sell it on 3D again, it really isn't going to have the same wow factor, so it will probably need to have more to it this time.

I can't remember much of the world apart from being a colourful jungle with some floating rocks and "unobtanium". Visuals aside, I thought it was a gooseberry fool stain of a film! Sorry!

I hope it doesn't try to add to much depth to Maverick. All I want is airplanes, ridiculous volleyball games, people buzzing the tower, cool call signs and a hard assed commander chewing the scenery.

Top Gun is like The Goonies in that it does rely somewhat on Nostalgia to carry it. I think The Goonies is brilliant because it reminds me of being a kid adventuring in the woods and countryside near my home but I only really properly watched Top Gun in the last 5 years and it's a very mixed film. The sex scene reshoots are pretty dire and under a modern lens it's basically s story of unrequited physical love between Maverick and Iceman.

Interesting example. At the start of lockdown my wife and I started a routine of two bottles of wine and two related 80s movies back to back every Saturday. Once of the rules was that neither of us had to have previously seen the film and that we had to watch at least half of the movie on the night. Goonies - being weird and racist - failed the halfway mark but Top Gun was amazing. It's a great distillation of 80s cool and insanely camp.

For me Commando would be that movie. There is a lot of camera ogling of Arnie's muscles and Bennet may as well be Freddy Mercury in a chainmail vest. But its also so much macho fun!

Basically both actors were shooting other films and came back to reshoot to accommodate test audience feedback - and they looked different with hair changes and such.

Although I’ve never had an issue with the scene at all personally thought it all just fit in with how cheesy 80’s it all was
