Yeah same at Vue, I can only assume it's been decided by the distributors and not the cinemas themselves. I wanted to see it today but don't want to watch in 3D so will have to wait till next week due to work.

Cinema seems to be actively trying to kill itself

It’s crazy how they seem to be actively trying to put people off.

At my closest cinema, it costs £11.80 (or £10.30 if you bring your own glasses) to see a 3D movie. It’s £8.30 for a 2D movie. On top of that is a 60p booking fee if you book online.

If I take my missus to see a newly released movie that they only have 3D showings for, it’s going to cost us £24.20. £24 to see a strawberry floating film and that’s without counting the costs of food/drinks before or after the cinema!

And the cheeky banana splits will show 30 minutes of adverts before they start the damn film.

Cinema is thriving actually and doing a lot better than expected, it's struggling against home media but I still don't think you can get a cinema experience at home. That said I imagine Cineworld and the distributor both decided on the 3D, some behind the scenes information:

Cineworld bastardized the industry years ago with their "Cineworld Card", they sorted out a ridiculous deal to allow it with studios, and studios don't get as much money as they do from companies such as Vue/Empire/Showcase as a result in the UK, and because they have the majority of the market, they can't change it. Cineworld believe they are a 'premium' brand and to be fair they do invest heavily in their newer cinemas but as a result will be a lot more expensive in most markets, or add a higher ticket charge to make money.

Usually films within the first two weeks of a run, 100% of the box office goes to the studio, after that the percentage gets lower and lower, (so the longer a film plays the better it is for the Cinema), but this is why food/drink is expensive, not only is the Cinema a luxury (which we all forget sometimes me included) but also the wages of the staff, and any profit comes from the food and drink. Cinema is basically a fast food restaurant with a movie screen. And nearly all cinemas allow you to take cold food/drink in with you, so you don't have to purchase when you are there

But anyway, back to the 3D point, studios heavily push 3D first due to the amount of profit that can be made, some films such as Star Wars sell themselves on this easily, where as others are mere cash cows. I'd be shocked that they don't offer a 2D alternative, from my experience, you would put 3D sales on first (pre-sale) and closer to the time add some 2D shows in to compensate).

*Adverts just to note Adverts are an absolute ballache, but again a huge money spinner especially when they get the right people (car/technology adverts) in the audience- and cinemas normally get checked for playing these adverts, as rightfully companies have paid lots of money to advertise, and can be fined if they aren't played. They definitely need reducing but, you are never going to escape it sadly.

I can't think of a single time I've preferred being at the cinema, as an opportunity to enjoy a great piece of cinema, to watching at home. It's obviously better as a social setting, but as I get older, I'm less and less interested in seeing films with people. I just want to enjoy them myself.

It's expensive, you're surrounded by loads of strangers who talk/rustle/use their phones, there are only a few "optimum" seats, and they aren't even that comfy.

Sit at home, and watch a film by yourself, you can put yourself in the pitch dark, not be disturbed, not have to pay a fortune, and you're in complete control of the your own comfort and viewing position. The only benefit cinema has is good quality versions of brand new films, and not having to worry about bothering the neighbours with the volume.

I'm probably going to the cinema this weekend to see Baby Driver, but that's mainly because the idea behind the film has me properly excited, and it's not available on Netflix yet, so I'd rather go than wait.

My work discount scheme gets me cheap cineworld tickets which is nice, if it wasn't for that I think I'd have given up going to the cinema for all but the odd movie a long time ago.
