The guy who made The Hangover and Old Skool means the movie is going to be up its own arse?
I was pretty surprised myself, but as I watched each Hangover film they got bizarrely pretentious. By the 3rd one it genuinely seemed like Todd Phillips thought these films had something to say, that the characters were in any way memorable or that the films were anything more than serviceable filler (I did really like the first one initially, but it didn't age well). In this time he also made Due Date which was honest to god one of the worst films I sat through for a good 10-month period. Him writing a supposed 'character piece' off the back of the dross he's pumped out in the last decade is the most off-putting thing about this film. Cherry on top is that it's strawberry floating Warner Bros and DC.
Would like to be wrong. Phoenix could be fun in the role, but his best roles have often come when working with filmmakers that could genuinely be solid shouts for the best of their generation.
