Wasn't there talk of a big studio doing this, perhaps paramount, back in Spring? There was push back from the cinemas, but I don't remember what happened after that.

No-one wanted to watch Mulan though. A remake nobody wanted filmed next door to a concentration camp.

VOD numbers don’t compare to Box Office that’s the problem. It’s all good reading on Twitter someone says they’d gladly spend £50 on Bond but the fact is they don’t.

Big budget blockbusters are designed for the theatrical experience, and the cost can be recouped this isn’t possible on VOD.

Ultimately the Bond delay is going to crush some cinemas & inevitably cause further job losses.

To me I don’t understand it, there’s no guarantee by April we’ll be in a better state and the Bond film at least for British/European cinemas would of actually made it worth while. 70-80% box office comes from outside the US, even with social distancing rules, I think they would of made serious bank.

We can’t compare it to Tenet / tenet had no world wide box office star, or draw really - the trailers weren’t impressive (confusing more than anything) and didn’t really drag people out as expected.

If it was Leo Di Caprio as the star that may have been different. Bond is a proven box office draw, and you know what you are going to get.

Such a shame. Other chains have dropped to weekends only or 15% of sites in case of Odeon for weekends.

But there’s nothing to show that’s mainstream until
Soul in November (unless it goes to Disney +), and with the Dune/Batman news most likely Wonderwoman is going to move .. again too.

Of course Boris tells people to go to cinemas. After the biggest chain closes & 5,500 lose their jobs...

I don't really get what people wanted them to do with Bond here. They would not have made enough money by putting it out in cinemas at present, it simply isn't possible. Tenet is the only comparable big budget movie we have and not only did that tank but it was also released during a period with fewer lockdown restrictions and fears than we have now. Come November when Bond was due to release there's every reason to suspect the scope for going to the cinema would have been even further reduced!

Pushing Bond out this year wouldn't save cinemas, it would have just delayed their inevitable demise whilst also endangering further jobs on the studio side when their most bankable project achieved a fraction of its potential sales.

The way to save the situation was for the government to get off its arse and actually support the economy but there was no chance of that happening.

I know Mulan disappointed, but I'm not convinced that would have been a big hit anyway.

Trolls World Tour did good numbers on VOD.

Tenet disappointed at the cinema.

I'm not sure there have been enough movies released to state that VOD can't replicate the numbers of cinema.

Mulan is the biggest VOD release and that was going to always going to disappoint commercially, theatrical release or no. There has not been a big budget VOD release so far because the studios are scared to risk it.

All the VOD releases have been low to mid-budget titles. If we get one big budget VOD release which does well, there will be a flood of studios releasing on VOD>

The longer we go without big cinema releases the more likely people will be to stump up the cash for a VOD release.

It's not a great comparison but if you look at pay per view sporting events then you see that where the content is appealing enough people are prepared to shell out for a one-off experience at home, they just need to find a way to make a movie coming out at home to be more of an event

I keep saying it but if Disney released Black Widow on VOD I would be all over that for £20-£30.

I'd probably even pay to watch No Time To Do despite having no interest in seeing it at the cinema pre-pandemic.

Mulan was basically sent out to die, was overpriced, especially if you add in the cost of Disney+, and they told everyone from day 1 that it was going to be available for free in December anyway.

The problem VoD is going to have is pricing and convincing people they should pay £20+ to watch a film on their own TV at home when they could watch a thousand other films at home for free instead. Trolls was successful because it's a family film and £20 in the middle of lockdown to keep kids entertained is cheap. Quickly loses the value if you're watching something alone or just as a couple though.

Mulan is now available on other video services, it's £20 on Amazon Prime which is comparable to some 4K blu-rays. The problem for the studios is how to generate hype for a movie viewed at home that is competing with all the other 'free' movies bundled in subscriptions.

Mulan wasn't helped by the fact that if you want to watch it in the future, you have to have an active Disney+ subscription, so you're essentially paying a lot more than £20 to keep it forever.

I reckon cinemas could reshow older films at a reduced entry price and still make a profit from selling popcorn and all the other food/drinks people pay over the odds for.

This is great news. Mulan was a massive disaster, as a lot of people hoped it would be given its status as a test-run for a very concerning consumption model, so this looks like plan-B

I’m confused as to why they didn’t still release it in cinemas alongside a VOD release.

What's confusing about it? No one is going to the cinema.

If I was them I would have released it VOD for £5ish and also released it for all subscribers on Christmas Day. At a low price they would have tempted a few to pay, while avoiding the Mulan bullshit.
