It's almost as if cinemas are going to become these giant Blockbusters, where you can go and see some of the new releases but mostly it's going to be older classics.

Mulan coming to Disney + in September. No cinema release and the cost...$30 for a rental, on top of the monthly subscription.

That's a crazy price for rental, especially if only one person is going to watch it. I know they need to make their money back, but rental should be a lot less than that. They would probably make more money too at a lower price because more people would pay it.

Considering it’s a high costing blockbuster & split it between say a family of 4.. it’s not that bad in the grand scheme. It’s the same as a cinema which is probably what they want to recoup.

It’s going to bomb anyway I think with Western audiences - all the draws to the original have been taken away

I actually hope it doesn't! Over the years there has been all kinds of chat about how to offer cinema releases at home; how to do it? can it recoup the money of a big movie? etc. Mulan isn't a made for TV movie, it's a big budget film and this move is being done presumably because Disney don't want to sit on it until cinema business gets back to normal, if it ever does. For sure it is a test to see if Marvel movies can be sold this way.

I love the cinema experience at its best, good seats, good people around you it magnifies the atmosphere. But often it can be a shoddy, noisy, expensive, time-consuming experience (all the pre-show crap). If for the price of two cinema tickets I can be in my own home and watch that blockbuster that I really want to see, eg Wonder Woman 1984, that's great.

After I typed my last post I was wondering how much I would actually pay, and I think definitely around the £20, possibly £25 would be right. The film companies would have to make a new release a big event and advertise it as normal and that seemed to work with the Trolls movie.

My wife and I can rarely go to the cinema because we have a young child and no readily available childcare (all our family live down south). We'd be able to give movie studios a lot more money if they did online releases.

Certainly with Disney+ a new release rental could be immediately followed by an email link to the Disney store to sell a load of related tat.

I think if they had a purchase price (even inflated) at the same time I would be ok with it.

Anyone remember in video stores that the ex rental VHSs had ridiculous prices. I seem to remember £45 or £85 but I was a kid so I might be getting confused.

I they they referenced video shop price of tapes on Seinfeld once and they were $200 dollars.

Obviously the price reflects the fact they can't charge per person. The film has been made with a budget that assumed they'd be selling cinema tickets per person. They can't do that when it goes direct to people's homes. You know who solved this issue way back in 2013? Microsoft with Kinect. It could work out how many people were watching and change charge accordingly

I’d have liked to see Mulan but I’m not strawberry floating paying that for a rental.

Also PSA - John Travolta’s The Fanatic is coming to Sky Movies at the end of the week - it was written and directed by, err, Fred Durst and is a legitimate train wreck of a movie. Must watch.
