If not, move to Bristol. Bristol is lovely and a little expensive for a reason (but not London expensive). I see it as cosmopolitan enough to not feel like you are away from a proper big city with all the facilities that go with it, but also not too far from the wonders of the (real) south west countryside. And its also only a couple of hours to London.

If you want proper beach, there is obviously nothing comparable to Australia here so I would think at the other items on your tick list.

Hah, that all sounds about right from what I've read so far. I know I have no chance of having a proper beach anywhere close to home, but being a little close to ocean feels nice for some reason. Think we'll visit both Brighton and Bristol (and possibly also Bath) to get a better idea in the summer and then go from there.

Also 'best' beaches are generally in the south west - which is not too far from Bristol.

You've uncovered our first and only criteria. Was only going to look because it's close by and someone once said its nice.

Think there's more than most think. I live in Germany right now, and have done for 4 years.

Looking for somewhere after Berlin that isn't a grey, ugly concrete jungle for 7 months of the year, somewhere that has a lot going on, a good cafe/food scene with a bit of nature close by. The fact that Bristol has a harbour was another big plus as I miss the water from Sydney. I never lived up North and have no family or roots there so that's probably out of the picture.

Have you got money? Bristol is great and has everything you need, but it is an expensive city. I've fallen in love with Devon and Exeter, but it is a very small city and very far down south. Devon is just beautiful though and I'm gutted to be moving to the East.

Will be living in Lincoln in 3 weeks. Again if anyone knows anything at all about Lincoln or the area then give us some info.

Lincoln's alright, but it suffers from the same thing as most of Lincolnshire - it's close to strawberry float all and the transport links are horrible. I live in Newark which is between Lincoln and Nottingham and it's a good for the A1 etc, but Lincoln itself is a pain to get to and from unless you drive.

The city itself is nice enough, it is very student heavy as it is really only the size of a large town but with a strawberry float off university stuck in the middle.

Bath is a lovely city but is horrible if you want to drive and I would imagine it is bloody expensive to live there. Beautiful place though.

Bath is waaaaay expensive, more so than Bristol. Yeah it's got loads of culture/ history but it's not got that good a night-life, though there are plenty of bars/pubs/ cafes etc to suit you.

I'd imagine the Twerton area of Bath would be dirt cheap though.... ;)
