SOR 4 is great. But Battletoads is far better in my opinion. The comparison I made is a bit silly really with a bit more playtime on Battletoads though, I would say only 2/3 of it is side scrolling beat em up action, the rest is twin stick shooter, platforming puzzle and Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes type of action. I am on the final act now but so far it feels like the perfect 8 hour game (not a forumite recommendation btw).

How do you do a combo in SoR4? I've no idea how, is it ever explained?

It's not a combo in the traditional sense.

I guess it's more like a hit meter.

If you keep hitting enemies (without getting hit) and don't leave too much time between hitting enemies your hit meter (and so your score) just keeps growing. If too much time passes you bank your combo/score. if you get hit you lose it all.

The challenge is:
1. Not getting hit (obviously!)
2. Knowing how to/getting from one area of the stage to the next in enough time to keep your hit meter going.

It's the key to getting a good score, and a better rank. As I said, I managed to get an S rank on every stage (on hard). It's one of my proudest gaming achievements! I did some stages with Adam - he can cover a lot of ground quickly so it helps to get from one area to the next and keep the meter going and others with Axel - his repeated punches special attack helps rack up the hits. For me it's been a bit like the difference between playing Halo on legendary compared to normal. It's still enjoyable to play but it's not until you try and do it (Legendary/getting an S rank) you really appreciate the depth/mechanics of the game.

My scores are around 25-30k. The high scores on the leader boards are in the millions. I've not bothered to see if there are any vids but I imagine some people must be capable of getting through a whole stage without getting hit and keeping the combo alive the whole time.

My first trip to the Everdoor in Spiritfarer actually just had me shedding tears. Manly tears obviously but christ I think that's the first time a game has made me cry.

I’m fairly sure that now would be a very bad time for me to try Spiritfarer.

Started this last night, as I fancied a change of style after 100%ing Assassin’s Creed 3/Liberation. It’s strawberry floating mental.

I have just fought for 2 hours to get this running on my old (but current) pc as I really wanted the mouse and keyboard and sat in front of a monitor experience.

My pc is an all in one job from 2012 with HD2500 integrated graphics. I’m not sure I’m going to know what is buggy and retro bu design and what is just my crappy hardware. I’m kind of amazed Game Pass beta app installed (it took a while tbf).

Fooled around in the start up screen. I think it’s going to be my jam. I first used the internet in 1997 at sixth form, so this is nostalgia that’s very much from my era.

And I had my own terrible homepage with rotating JPEGs and embedded wav files. And way too much personal data.

Yeah, not using a keyboard and mouse is kind of spoiling the immersion a bit. But hell, it’s bringing back so many memories of my days on Freeserve dial-up, browsing with Netscape.

I just got a virus! This is frustrating but also great fun.

I believe you may be able to use keyboard and mouse on Xbox (you can on switch). Obviously most peoples layouts (myself included) do not really work great for this though.

I’m only in the tutorial and it’s got my misty eyed with nostalgia, the terrible grating speech with terrible edits and loads of hiss. I gather the game has been updated for this release with extra web pages etc also, so a great time to dive in all around.
