I have my headphones in and listen to my own music

I can't imagine music being played in an office. Sure, it may suit some job types - maybe if you're in an ice cream van or a clothes store - but otherwise...uhm... no.

Also... headphones? In an office? Where we're working with other people? My word!

I put in headphones because of the other people. Allows you to focus and ignore other conversations.

I can remember one job I had where there was a radio in the basement filing room. If you were ever unlucky enough to have to search out ancient files or were down there filing a big stack of files, then you were allowed to stick the radio on. Once they brought the radio upstairs when the whole office was stuffing envelopes when we were doing a mass mailing.

Other than that, I have never known a radio to be on in an office.

If I need music I will use headphones. Generally our office is pretty noisy as there are loads of people in there and lots of stuff going on and discussions about issues and what have you that come up on the wall of monitoring so music would just be covered by that.

I would genuinely feel uncomfortable working in an office environment where folks wear headphones. It feels like a step too far into a world where people are constantly looking at their phones, browsing the internet and having to be tapped on the shoulder because you want to have a conversation with them.

It's a good job your colleague in the office next door lets you listen to his music then

Never come across a radio in an office setting before, I imagine it would be very distracting. Headphones are encouraged here as they are in every other office Ive worked in, helps people ocus and just get on with things instead of being in every conversation going.

Tapping on shoulders? Why? You use the office instant messaging system if you need to talk to someone.

The first office I worked in had Radio 2 playing all day. I didn't find it distracting although if you're not a fan of generic pop music then it's not ideal. We soon got taken over though and the new bosses outlawed anything that resembled fun or a pleasant place to work, so that soon went away.

These days I just put my headphones in if I want to listen to something at work, but a couple of girls in the office occasionally try and inflict Kiss FM on us all. They soon get told to cut that gooseberry fool out.

Maybe this explains why Staydead was emailing that girl. He tried talking to her but she had her headphones on and couldn't hear him.

I prefer music purely because utter silence is awful...

There's silence right now, and it's just :dread:

Got told off for wearing headphones so can't even do that :x

 . My sister works in an office where they wanted to reduce their volume of internal email... and they introduced instant messaging.

I've not been in an office environment for a little while but I hope to soon return. I feel that it could be quite an awakening given the pace of change and it sounds like I'd better take a smartphone and a headset with me.

It sounds like it will have changed beyond recognition for you. We no longer have typewriters and they let ladies work in the offices now.

Some offices even allow people to travel to work without their top hats. :dread:

It's ok, we are still allowed monocles.

We're allowed to listen to music through headphones, but as we've got a call centre in the same room (big open plan office) we don't normally have music playing out loud. Thank god.
