Potentially one for the Work thread, but wanted to create a poll to get thoughts on this.

Does your office have music playing that everyone has to listen to? How do you feel about it?

I feel like a grumpy old man at my office at the moment, but music has been recently introduced, and my mood has been seriously affected by having to suffer through generic pop and Spotify adverts from 8.30 until 6.

We are allowed to listen to our own music via earphones. All day.

We're encouraged to stick in earphones. I quite enjoy putting on a podcast if I'm doing something that doesn't require a huge amount of concentration.

Having music playing in the office that everyone has to listen to would drive me mad.

We always used to have a quiet office for years, we'd chat plenty but there would be no radio or music on, but then we got a new manager who brought a radio with him.

At first it was a bit annoying but I soon grew to quite like the background noise, it was never especially loud and we tended to have Radio 2 on so no annoying repeating ads to drive you insane! But then a new manager came along who made it very clear that no sound was required in the room and so the radio went silent once more. I actually found it much harder to re-adjust to its absence than I did getting used to the background noise in the first place!

I put on headphones and listen to my own music if I want music

Usually we have Absolute Radio on, which is great because they play a decent mix of old and new hits and don't repeat songs with barely any talking. The office across the way has Radio 2 on with Jeremy Vine. :dread:

No music in the office, but I have Spotify on my phone. I wonder if I'm less productive when I have it on, so I'm trying to knock it on the head.

When I worked at Costa each store used to get a CD every couple of months from head office. It was an encrypted CD which would only play on the players we had in store. The music on them was an eclectic mix, particularly when they tied it into a TV ad campaign which had Kiss as the soundtrack, so it would be easy listening and instrumental stuff punctuated by I WAS MADE FOR LOVING YOU BABY YOU WERE MADE FOR LOVING MEEEEEEE.

I like Kiss but that was a trying few months.

I work in one of two offices depending on the role I'm filling that week. If it's final product it's right by the factory so we get some generic top 40s radio blasted through. If I'm on blending I'm on my own on the other side of the site so I get to listen to whatever. Usually just throw the radio onto Planet Rock and listen to Alice Cooper talking bullshit.

I work from home most days so I can listen to whatever I want, but if I'm doing something that actually requires thinking I can't concentrate.

When I used to work in retail we had the radio playing and some days it was awful as the same songs would get repeated over and over. :dread:

Our office puts on Pandora or SiriusXM stations, usually the same one for months until everyone is sick to death of it - right now they're on the "Pop Rocks" station. Sometimes they pick a '60s or '70s station, even a '50s station, but some dick always complains and it quickly returns to the 80s or 2000s stations we're all tired of.

I listen to my own stuff through my headphones all day. It has the added benefit of drowning out the constant loud inane chatter of the old women in adjacent cubicles/aisles; the same 3 stories about their weekend, repeated at least half a dozen times, somehow funnier with each retelling, complete with full rundowns of their entire weekly shop or some other equally irrelevant crap.

Working in a loud warehouse, we have at least two radios going on opposite sides at any given time. Mostly they're either on XFM or XS Manchester, which is generally fine, but there's a little too much Morrissey (i.e. any) for me.

I pretty much have my headphones in all day anyway.

I basically work in a call centre, so no radio. Gets them out of paying for a licence I guess.

We have Co-Op radio, which is 60% chart shite, 20% golden oldies, 10% actual decent songs and 10% adverts about putting cheese on your strawberry floating hot dog. Could be worse, I guess.

We don't have music in the office and are not allowed to wear headphones.

I don't really mind, I don't want to listen to anybody else's music.

I miss being able to listen to my own earphones but I'm so thankful that my current work place doesn't allow radio. I hated the radio being on in my last place.

Same here. Everywhere else I've been I've always had music or podcasts on my headphones, although being doubled over crying with laughter at the parapod when your boss walks past probably wasn't the best advert for productivity.

I can't imagine an office that has music playing over a speaker. That would drive me insane I'm sure.

I just listen via my headphones.
