My wife thinks she saw a rat in the garage this morning.

It was brown, moved fast, and had a long tail!

Sounds like a rat to me, but how do we kill it or get rid of it. Our garage is old so thiers little holes every where. It was cleaned and emptied not so long back but thier is some gear in thier etc.

Not sure if i want to put rat poison down, i have a two year old kid, so what the best way to deal with this situation please?

Any body had to kill rats?

Had a rat problem when I was younger, we had some rabbits and the rats decided to build their home in with them, so my Dad pretty much got a spade and slaughtered the rats, if at all possible don't do the same as him, the noises the rats made was horrible, maybe get pest control in or something.

Rats eh? Little dirty bastards, I hate them. I don't usually want to harm animals but a rat I would have no qualmes in killing. It all dates back to when I was about five, we lived in a semi-detached house and had a side passage. I had just got back from school when I spotted the little strawberry floater, being young I didn't realise the dangers of touching rats, but all I saw was a fluffly little animal, so I trapped it and picked it up, it bit me, drew blood and I dropped it. I told my mum and I was whisked straight to the doctors for injections etc.

We recently had a rat problem in our present place. We have a water feature in the back garden, one night I was watching a film when something caught my eye, oh yes, it was one of them! I borrowed the old mans 2.2 air rifle, but the little gooseberry fool was too quick for it, as soon as it heard the whoosh of air, it was off before the pellet could hit. Secondly, I took apart the water feature to find a network of holes, I first ran a hosepipe down there to soften the ground, then I demolished the whole network of tunnels. That worked for a few days until I saw it climb out from a hole in the garage roof. That was it, last straw, poison. I put two or three plates of it under the bench (so the dogs couldn't get at it) and about a day later I noticed all three plates were empty. And a few days after that a putrid smell coming from the pile of odds and sods at the back of the garage. And no rat has been seen since! Have that you bastard!

Alternatively, get a cat. We usually find one of the strawberry floaters disembowelled by the back door on a monthly basis.

We want a cat, but all our furniture is new including leather sofa's and we feel a cat would scratch the hell out of it all.

Ours spends most of her time outside, although seeing as she is now 19, we let her in occasionally.

If it comes down to cats or rats then I know which I'd rather have.

If it's not an option though then really your only choice is pest control.

We had mice in our basement, I phoned the pest control people at the council and they came out and put poison down, it was in little boxes with a door for the mice to go inside, I don't think a kid would eat it. I think we had to pay £45 which was just a set fee for as much help as we needed till they were gone, which took about two weeks.

He did say that they'll keep coming back if there's easy ways to get in, which there was in our basement, so you may need to plug up the holes in the garage.

I know an old lady that swallowed a rat! How about that? She swallowed the rat! She swallowed the rat to catch the spider which wriggled and Jiggled inside her.

Want me to send the senile old twat round?

Fix the f#cker.

Fix him what? A sandwich? That's not going to help the problem.

The problem with cats is when they catch something they'll want to bring it inside and play with it. So you'll have this dying lizard/rat/bird running round your house with blood, guts and feathers spilled everywhere.

There was a mouse in the house a week or so ago. Had to get up at 2am to help my brother catch it but we never did. A cople of days later we got it in the kitchen and let it go into the garden.
