I don’t remember anybody having a NES or Master System. Everyone had C64/Speccy/Amstrads before moving on to Amigas/Megadrive/SNES. With the odd Atari ST weirdo here and there.

Indeed, most British kids now probably assume 80s gaming was all about Atari, the industry crash and the NES.
They've most likely never heard of a Spectrum and never will.
Any child that's found that doesn't know about the Spectrum should be sent on a 6 month long re-education detention.
Screw the rest of their education these kids need to know why Sir Clive Sinclair was elevated to the status of living God and is now revered globally for the genius he is.
Gonna be a rocky course once they get to the C5 and Spectrum QL :p

I'm in the lucky situation that I can't remember what anyone thought at lower school so I'm going to assume they all had Spectrum's
.
Also when I was at lower school the ZX81 was out and Spectrum 48K was about I think but not sure.

Even a living God has rough edges.
The C5 was just ahead of its time is all.

The Spectrum came out in 1982 (had to Google it) and I didn't start primary school until 1989 so I didn't meet anyone who had one, when I saw pictures in EDGE I assumed it was something from the 70s like the Atari 2600.
I remember kids arguing about NES and Master System and going on about Alex Kidd, that then became SNES vs MegaDrive and Mario vs Sonic.
A few kids had Commodores (64 or Amiga 500) but they didn't really talk about games.
One kid on the posh new estate that had just been built even had a PERSONAL COMPUTER... IN HIS HOUSE (kitchen), WITH A CD-ROM AND WINDOWS ON IT

The ST was used but the quality of audio it could create wasn't exactly what most would hope for.

Seems like Nintendo weren't as popular as Sega during the late 80s and early 90s, GameSpot and IGN always go on about Nintendo absolutely dominating during that time which is certainly the American perspective being projected onto the world.
Most Americans don't seem to even be aware of the Master System, and the Genesis is simply referred to as the "Sega" by a lot of them.

I'm 36 and don't really remember the C64 or Speccy. My dad had a BBC B computer and the first console I had was the Mega drive. I knew one guy with an Amiga 500 another friend had a Dragon 32. A couple of people I knew had Neses. Then everybody started getting Windows based computers, especially Dell's. I seem to remember the SNES being huge at my school. I think I saw some of the older 8-bit machines but they always seemed a bit lame compared to the mega drive, Amiga and early pc's I had access to.

Part of me wonders if Nintendo, in all their delusion, thinks that the retro itch of the world's gamers will be adequately scratched this year by NES games on Switch online.
