The controllers for the Classic series have have been really authentic to the originals, but I do hope they modernise the control stick on the N64 Mini to some extent. It would suck if it had the same "wears out over time" flaw that the originals did.

I'm approaching my 33rd birthday and I'm afraid to say I've never played on anything older than an Atari 2600
Never played on a BBC Micro, a Spectrum, a C64 or anything else of that era.
I blame my parents for moving to the Middle East for a big chunk of my childhood years - it was a brief stint with the 2600 and then straight into Mega Drive town

Blimey, that was quite the technological leap, Preezy! The 2600 was circa 1978 whilst the MD was here in 1990... not only around a twelve-year gap but, at the time, the advances of each new machine were way more visible, too.

There’s not a lot older than the 2600 to be fair, nothing you’d want to play anyway. Gaming prior to 1977 is quite gooseberry fool.

It also seems that the games chosen are rather random, as they're not all first-party published.
I would like to speculate that this is evidence for these games forming part of the line-up of a Mini N64 but it seems... too generous?
But I really can't figure out why else these specific games are on there.
The Turoks are there for example. No Goldeneye but lots of Rare games including JFG and Mickey's Speedway. Tony Hawks 2 and the Star Wars games. F1WGP. Ridge Racer 64.
What are they doing???

Sure was a leap, I went from playing these god-awful "games" on a box that resembled a Station Wagon, to suddenly having Sol Deace, Aladdin, Jurassic Park and Streets of Rage blasting out of my living room TV. It was glorious

It's truly the shame of our generation.
The Spectrum, Amstrad and C64 always held a kind of strange fascination for me. I was too young to be part of their golden age and when we got our first computer it was a BBC (Mum was a teacher and Dad had access to loads of lovely pirated games), but two of my cousins had a Spectrum and C64 respectively so I got to see some of them in action and play a little bit.
I've been on a total nostalgia trip recently as well, so I'm definitely looking to pick up an older 8-Bit micro at some point. Definitely a Spectrum, maybe an Amstrad and for peak childhood memories a BBC Model B I think.

We were a little late to the party in our house, not getting a Spectrum until the +3 came out in '87 but it still seemed incredible to my tiny eyes.
Look ma the blocky, colour clashing pixels are jerking around the screen! It only took 12 minutes to load as well! 
Despite always being a speccy lad at heart I did come to realise that, despite my best protestations, I had to admit the C64 was a superior machine...

The C64 had better sound, colour and scrolling than the Spectrum, but the Speccy was better at vector graphics and had the faster processor. It was a fun time as their capabilities were different and this made games varied even though the machines were huge rivals. Throw in the Amstrad, BBC and many other lesser known competitors and it was a real golden age for variety. Digital Foundry comparisons would have been amazing back then!

Totally.
It's kind of sad that everything got swallowed up and replaced by the PC (With Macs finding their own niche) as each of the old 8bit and 16bit systems really seem to have had their own character and quirks. But I guess it's better to have something that's basically a "Standard" to work from. Would be interesting to see how things evolved if PC's had stayed as hugely expensive machines used exclusively for business and research.

Yes but C64 kids were the cool ones. Speccy kids were inferior plebs and Amstrad kids were the lowest of the low.
Don’t get me started on the BBC weirdos.

To be fair very few of my friends and I had computers. By the time we started getting interested in them (89/90ish) stuff like the NES, Master System and Mega Drive were more common and the few that did have computers tended to have Amigas (Though I don't remember ever wanting one). The BBC I had was great though. It was where I first played a lot of classic arcade games, either through ports or clones. Plus it had Elite and Chuckie Egg.

I only ever knew saw BBC microcomputers at school. I don’t remember anybody actually having one at home.

I always thought the kids who had 'home computers' were weird losers for putting up with gooseberry fool graphics, ridiculous load times and god awful controllers.

8 bit "home computers" *were* the gaming scene in the UK in the period circa 1982 through 1988, with the 16 bit versions taking the battle against the rise of the consoles. I get mildly agitated when this history is washed over by the (generally) US-based gaming media
