I was thinking, why with these mini consoles have they not put some amount of small flash memory in them and set up an online store where you can download extra games at a cost?

Increased manufacturing cost per unit, needing to setup the infrastructure to support it and the costs associated with maintaining it.

The idea is for them to be simple, cheap, quick ways to make money from Nostolgia.

I was thinking along similar lines in the PlayStation Classic thread, especially because Sony already has (had?) PS1 games available on PSN. Effectively make the mini console the physical terminal for a digital retro store expressly for that platform. That seems like a good idea to me, but as noted:

What would be a novel addition to this and the PlayStation Classic would be including the unreleased Resident Evil 0 and 1.5 on each system respectively. I’m not sure how much of each exists but it would be a cool bonus.

Wikipedia says they released Zero on Gamecube because they were having technical troubles getting it running on the N64, so would guess they anything they did have running would be a broken mess. Still interesting to have seen what it would have looked like though if they could get even a small section of it up and running.

Can't wait to play Ultimate War, Riqa, and Caesar's Palace on this.

What I want on this.

Super Mario 64
F Zero
OoT
Lylat Wars
Paper Mario
Majoras Mask
Diddy Kong Racing
Resident Evil 2
Wave Race
1080
Pilot Wings
Goldeneye 007

Would really love to play Diddy Kong Racing again, although this game and Goldeneye are unlikely. I would gooseberry fool a brick if they got even some Rare titles.

Potential leak: https://www.reddit.com/r/n64/comments/9 ... o_64_mini/

I'm not too sure on this, my spidey sense says fake but I want it to be real. The front when it's down [in these pictures] makes it look ugly, just have the original white controller sockets move instead of a shelf across the bottom of the console stay down.

I dread to think how much the additional controllers would cost.

I'd say that's fake, but probably not too far off what the final product will end up looking like.

What was the reason for the memory expansion not already being included in the machine, was it just a cost issue?

You mean why not include the memory right from the start, KK? It was indeed all down to cost; back in 1996, 4 Mb of RAM was expensive. The N64 was designed with some future expansion in mind, hence the memory slot and the DD (disk) port. However- as had been proven ever since! - console expansions often break up the potential userbase and so developers rarely spend too much time or money in taking full advantage of them.

As I recall, DK64 only needed the Memory expansion because there was a bug in the game that they could only fix with the Memory expansion being present, but much of the game worked fine without it.

I remember reading something along those lines, too, Laga - quite odd if true! I believe that DK64 launched at £59.99 including the required memory expansion; pretty expensive but, considering a lot of third-party titles were often £54.99 anyway, not too bad a deal.

That's the only reason I have one anyway - and I sold the game. So some day I can play Perfect Dark and use the Hi Res mode in some games, that's about it.

Yeah, it's a handy bit of kit to have if you're a 64 gamer, Gecko. I remember that some games had "high res" modes available when the pak was slammed into the system... including Road Rash 64, IIRC.

If by some miracle they got Diddy Kong It would sell me the console so I could finally ditch my xbox 360

No, it's not, not sure if Rubix is getting mixed up with Banjo Kazooie which is part of Rare Replay?
