That would actually be rad, so if it's not what he's doing I suggest he takes it in that direction! :P

I'm going to try something bizarre. Writing my 50k by typing it out on my phone on my train commutes. Let's see how quickly I get RSI!

Do I need to add legal disclaimers to the OP?

I wrote 200 words over lunch today, about somebody getting angry with a plump rat. Small victories.

This sounds like a cross between a reference manual and Mortal Engines and I would read it.

This is far better than what I'm actually writing.

Harry stared out of the window, his mind still struggling to process the events that had unfolded that afternoon. How could this have happened? Did someone do this on purpose? No, surely not. What monster could even conceive of such an idea!

Surveying the debris still strewn across his workshop he tried to piece together some semblance of rationality to it all, to locate some thread that would make things click together the way the connecting rod and crank shaft of a finely tuned V6 engine would.

There must be more to it, something he wasn't seeing. Letting out a world-weary sigh John pushed against the edge of the workbench and urged his aching body back onto its feet. He wasn't beaten yet, but if he didn't find the answer soon then there was going to be one more failure to be added to his tally, and this one just might be the final locking nut on top of the scrapheap that was his life.

Looks like you’re trying to engineer drama. :|

It is a bit laboured I know. I think I cranked it up a tad too much.

1697 today and again it came quite easy. I seem to be going through on days followed by off days fairly consistently which is both galling and encouraging.

I didn't do anything yesterday. I got really obsessed with that 2024 game and just wasted my evening. Will try and get do some today but going to a gig. Feeling really tired this week for some reason.

I had a pretty lousy evening, with somewhere south of 400 words committed to the cause. Trouble is, like Lex, I mostly just want to play a video game at the moment...

I had a long Skype meeting yesterday and managed to play while one the call so I managed to finish it. Hopefully I'll be able to keep pushing on.

I've decided not to write anything today. I'm in a very, very weird place this morning (like, in my head and stuff) so I'm backing away from stuff that's going to take a creative toll.

Will try and make it up next week.

Channel it into your writing, let the weirdness flow through you...

On the other hand, hope you're doing okay.

For the people doing this - Do you plan out a book *before* the actual novel-writing month? Or do you spend a bit of time in the first week just laying out what you want to do while writing occasional scenes to drop into the finished piece here and there? Like I fancy giving it a go at some point but historically when I just start writing without a plan it goes terribly.

That veeeeeery much depends on the person, so much so that there are NaNo terms for the two camps: planner and ‘pantser’ (as in, flying by the seat of). Also plantsers, who do some of both.

I’m a planner. This year I’m editing an old novel, so pantsing was not an option; but I planed in previous years too, including grossly over planning my very first (terrible) effort. I did try to pants last year, and ended up doing the planning in my head.

On the one hand, it might be worth writing just a few words today if you can, to help cement it as a habit. On the other hand, you know your head best. Get well soon either way.

I'm kind of 50/50 although I only really decided to join because of this thread. I had written out some basic plan for maybe the first 15% of a book but have kind of got stuck where to go after that point. I did read No Plot No Problem the book by the guys who run the website they definitely come down on side of doing some planning although they point out a lot of people make it through without a plan. Also some people do different levels of planning, they mention one woman who plots out 90% of her novel because it motivates her to get to the end so she knows what happens.

I'm just exploring my short story as I go. Writing a scene naturally leads me to think about what happens before or next. If I think of two plot points at once I just leave myself a little reminder of the other one.

I have taken to bringing my Mac to work so that I can scrawl a few words in my lunch hour.

We’re almost at peak NaNo ladies and gentlemen.
