Finally! We'll see just how this new NFS plays, and the world we'll be exploring.
Bit concerned about how close between reveal and release this'll be, but I have confidence that the developers will make it a good one.

I presume it'll be Ghost Games developing again? Rivals was okay (which they co-developed with Criterion), but haven't picked up the last two because of a middling reception. Fingers crossed this one might be a return to form.

EA bingo card:

[ ] "Connected/shared experience" (live service BS)
[ ] Ultimate Team-like blind purchasing of car parts/your "crew"
[ ] No microtransactions at launch (but added in 3 months later)
[ ] "It's about giving players choice and freedom if they want to boost their progress"
[ ] At least 3 versions (standard/digital deluxe/ultimate, most expensive versions come with innocent-sounding xp/cash doubler perk)

Any more?

I believe that the game has been in development for quite some time, DR, so hopefully the reveal will show a pretty substantial game.

Yeah, Ghost are on coding duties, Celer. I picked up the last two and - although I haven't played much of 'em - I still found them to be pretty decent. As you say, though, the general reception was only middling.

This is my fear, Trelliz! I have avoided EA games in recent years but NFS is a series that I still look out for. I really hope that there is none of their light content / extra payment BS!

Launching November 5 on Origin Access Premier/Play First Trial and November 8 Worldwide.

By now you’ve seen the reveal trailer (that's it above) and your mind is surely spinning with a number of questions and thoughts, let’s scratch that itch a bit.

Your freedom flows under the veil of darkness, but it comes with a risk. Where there is a risk, there is a reward, so it’s your call.

By day you’ll be competing for bank in the Speedhunter Showdown. A series of events that will have you racing and drifting your way to a big payday. When the sun goes down the heat levels rise.

As the night sky settles across Palm City you’ll be wanting to swap out legitimate events for those of a more underground nature.

Tear up the rulebook and the streets to make them your own. You might be building up your bank balance during the day, but at night is when your REP will be on the line. Take the risks and you’ll own the night.

Cops (cops, cops!) patrol Palm City with various levels of aggression, with their behaviour altering based on the time of day. During the day the Palm City PD will have a more casual presence. They’ll still be there as an ever present threat, but leave them alone and they’ll return the favour.

Once the city descends into darkness, the rulebook changes and you’re not the only ones breaking the rules. As the sun goes down, a rogue task force comes out to play. This task force, led by the ever so charming Lt. Mercer, will need no excuse to hunt you, and your car down. You’ll be meeting more of Mercer and his squad as you play through NFS Heat.

Push your car, and your nerves to the limit as you risk it all. Make one wrong move and your night is over. This is survival of the fastest, hold your nerve and don’t slow down.

The choice between day and night is entirely your call. Had enough of the day? Then simply head to your garage and you’ll be given the option to leave within the veil of darkness. From there you can make your own rules. Play by your rulebook, take chances and take home the prize.

It wouldn’t be NFS without customisation and you’ll be taking your car to new levels of personalization. We’ll be giving more details on this at gamescom next week, so no spoilers just yet.

What we can confirm is that customisation options are earned through the completion of in-game events. For example, you spot a street race on your map and notice it has a new performance part up for grabs. Win the race, win the part. Speed cards from NFS Payback are gone.

Fancy some gameplay? Be sure to keep an eye on the gamescom: Opening Night Live where you’ll get your first look of NFS Heat in action, including cops, day and night events, the garage, customization and our brand new handling model.

Stay Tuned

This looks pretty neat. The idea is decent and I think I can just about cope with the "We're so dang cool and rebellious!" vibe  . I am looking forward to seeing some actual gameplay at Gamescom.

This looks awful. From the icon I was expecting it to be set in the eighties which could have been something mildly original.

Rockstar need to get another Midnight Club out of the door. They could make a killing with micro transactions in a Midnight Club Online.

That's what GTA 5 has effectively become.

Maybe I'm getting old, but that trailer looks so "greetings fellow kids" it hurts. Not interested in running from the cops all the time either, and while saying the previous slot machine loot system is gone is a noble statement, this is EA so hold off preordering until the bullshit starts to smell.

A few more details have been listed in Amazon's product description:

Take chances, take victories – lay it on the line in the speed hunter Showdown by day, competing to win bank in race, drift, and off-road events. Then take on the city by night and hit up underground street races to build your reputation.

Be unruly, be expressive – With even more options to customize your stable of cars as well as personalize your identity behind the wheel, this isn’t the time to hold back – Be unique and make sure everyone knows who you are.

Beat the Heat – you’ll have to go out of your way to rile up the cops patrolling palm city during Daylight hours. But after Dark the rules change when a Rogue task force comes out to play – now they’re on the hunt for you and your wheels

I haven't loaded up a NFS game for ages and this reveal has made me want to go back and play 'em. But, yeah, I'm apprehensive about how EA will jam payments into the new game.

Doesn’t look great.

I still hope one day they’ll release a upgraded/HD version of Most Wanted, somehow doubt they will though :(

Amazing to think that this is one of the longer-running franchises in gaming. I remember enjoying the original NFS on my PlayStation back in '96; and that was a port of the 3DO original from '94. Perhaps I'll set up a NFS vote thread so that we can discuss our favourites.

The pre order-deluxe edition comes with 'rep' (xp) and 'bank' (money) boosters, so not buying the most expensive version means you're playing in slow mode. So that's a good start.

Haven't played an NFS game since Porsche Unleashed, long since lost interest in the series after it went 'Street'.

Edit: wrong thread.

Well, I at least get ten hours of play time through EA Access. I think that's all I've ever played of these new ones since the reboot. I guess this one could get my interest back, but it's got to really impress me with the footage.

Is this another explorable city effort then?

Even without the XP and Bank shite, that makes it a no from me.

I just want races. I want to move straight from one to the other. I don't want to explore, or discover events and other things. It's one of the reasons that I wasn't a huge Burnout Paradise fan. I'm just not interested in that kind of thing.

Which is probably why NFS: Hot Pursuit (2010) is the last NFS game I clicked with. It's also one of the reasons why I can't be bothered with the Forza Horizon games and all the shite they layer on top of the actual races.

I just watched this simply because of the logo and was anticipating Glenn Frey to kick in at any moment.

The game I created in my mind was infinitely better, LET ME TELL YOU.

I really can't stand the trend of making everything in games so convoluted, want to quickly get into the next race by a simple menu? nah mate, you've got to drive across this huge map and flash your lights at a specific NPC

Its not just racing games either, the newer Everybody's golf games insist on making you walk round the course between holes, yes it's more realistic but also boring as strawberry float and time consuming.

You'd rather it was like Midtown Madness, where everything was accessible from a menu, leaving the actual freeroam nothing but... well, nothing. That Everybody's Golf example sounds a bit extreme in the idea, but the world is created to allow the devs to put stuff into the game that wouldn't fit as a menu item [or is more natural being a part of the world without needing a menu item]. And depending on how well that world is used, it can give a reason for the freeroam to exist. Besides, better the Forza Horizon way than having every single thing be available in the world itself or as a menu item which pretty much renders the freeroam pointless like in The Crew 2.

You want an easy way to get into the main event, such as races, with nothing in between except a menu select, but have the option for those who'd rather stay on the map to get to them as well. Then you have something exclusive on both map and menu that the other wouldn't get.

As for Everybody's Golf making you walk to the next hole... that just sounds like needless padding within the game. Unless there's somehow a point or a way to mess about, though it doesn't sound like it.
