To be fair Alien 3 could have been a pretty bold film had they given Fincher more freedom. Some of the cut stuff is pretty grim in tone.

The alien franchise has been strawberry floated up beyond repair now so I have zero expectation. In fact I don't think they even need to do another. I can guarantee they will crowbar in stupid ideas to "differentiate it" from the others.

All that hybrid crap has no place here.

Are you including 'Prometheus' in that statement, Daz? I think it could have potential in the next two movies.

Though I agree with Alien: Resurrection being a car crash and the AvP films to add to the fray.

I enjoyed the first half of Prometheus and the set design atmosphere etc was great, but the random monster ending and logic flaws was pure :fp:

I felt Ridley returning for origin story would set the franchise back on track, but I fear it's lost it's way.

I like to think resurrection and AVP never happened.

I can accept alien 3 now for what it is and what it isn't. At the time it was huge disappointment, but it had merits. Just coming off back of aliens (my fav film of all time) it felt cheap and slow paced. I often wonder if 3 had come before aliens it might have been better received.

Actually thought it was half decent, but I can see why they've done this. Thought Alien 4 was the real stinker.

If the Alien franchise never existed, I think Alien Resurrection would be seen as an okay sci-fi/monster film by itself. It's got some decent bits here and there.

But it's just so difficult when Alien and Aliens are burned forever in our minds, it's impossible not to get downhearted when watching it.

 Yeah, that's one retcon for which I imagine not a single strawberry float will be given.

There are two moments which I will always try and watch when it's on TV: Xenomorphs in captivity and their breakout and the Ripley clones. :dread:

Takes some balls to just proclaim that 2 films in the canon suddenly no longer exist. I don't like it.
Necessary, though? Probably, it backed itself into a dark smelly corner.

+1 Alien 3 love, the directors cut in particular.

You're ok with the fact Resurrection was proclaimed cannon? :/

Nuke it, nuke it from orbit.

Really enjoyed 3 but no denying it doesn't really add anything to the franchise.

They clearly want whoever plays Newt to carry the franchise

I'm not ok with the movie, but it is canon, undeniably. To say adios to not 1 but 2 movies...I just think it's a bit extreme, but arguably necessary.

another +1 for Aliens 3 directors cut. it's Resurrection that really annoys me :x

i don't like that Ripley is back for this one - how are they going to shoe-horn her into meeting aliens again? surely she wants absolutely nothing to do with them at this point

+1 for Alien: Resurrection can strawberry float off and die.

However I've always really liked Alien 3. It's clearly got a lot of issues and compared to the first two it's nowhere near as good but I've never, ever, watched it and thought "Well this is gooseberry fool."
Plus I was a fan of them killing off Ripley. There was no need to take the character any further.
Some people don't like that they killed Newt and Hicks as well. Again I've never had a problem with it as both characters existed purely to give Ripley some emotional hooks in Aliens. So it made sense to me that they're taken from her. She doesn't get to where she is at the end of Alien 3 without having that sense of loss.

But as for this retconning.... we'll see how it goes.
