I think this is what makes Tiger King a step above the recent spate of true crime documentaries we've seen on Netflix. Usually, we get firsthand accounts, either through interviews or witness testimonies, of [what we're being told] happened. 'The Mind Of Aaron Hernandez' and 'Surviving R Kelly' being two recent big ones. Yes, there's CCTV footage of Aaron Hernandez and there are tapes of R Kelly peeing on teenagers, but this forms only a small part of the overall narrative.
Tiger King just has actual footage of the vast majority of a story spanning
years.
Jeff Lowe interrupting Joe's conference call with Howard and the lawyers to tell Howard that both he and his 'banana split wife' can strawberry float off? On tape.
The aftermath of Saff getting his arm ripped off? On tape.
Truckloads of expired meat from Wallmart getting dropped off at the zoo? On tape.
Joe very nearly needing to shoot several lions in the head because someone has clearly sabotaged his shoes? On tape.
I think Tiger King benefits from the scenario and everyone involved already being sufficiently bizarre that someone had already tried to film a reality show about them before they started filming this documentary, which itself started prior to many of the most insane events happening. Given what we've seen, I can't imagine
what was in the footage that was destroyed in the fire.
