http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/24/netflix-to-expand-to-uk-ireland-in-early-2012-looks-to-chall/

Well it looks like Netflix's rumored UK launch was a lot more than just a rumor. Today, the company announced that it will indeed expand to the UK and Ireland "in early 2012," promising to offer unlimited streaming on PCs, tablets and mobile devices at a "low monthly subscription price." The company didn't say what that price would be, nor did it offer any details on available content or supported devices, though more details will be announced closer to its launch. We're also expecting to hear more from Netflix during its Q3 earnings conference call later today, when we should find out about the impact of its recent price hike and Qwikster turnaround. Whether or not its foray into the UK can loosen Lovefilm's grip on the domestic market, however, remains to be seen.

Brilliant news.

Having listened to a lot of US podcasts talk about just how great the service is I'm really excited to see what they can offer to people over here. I realise it won't be as good as the US version but its still an awful lot better than nothing.

We already have something similar with Lovefilm though. Still competition can only be seen as a good thing.

All depends on price and content. If it is reasonably cheap (I guess it will be around the same cost as Lovefilm) and has a good selection, then I am interested. If they overprice it or have gooseberry fool content, then I will carry on using Sky Anytime and pirating.

If what I've heard about Netflix and the experience I've had with lovefilm, Netflix is waaay better.

Cool. All lies on a few details for me though - the amount of content, price, picture quality and stability.

We could do with Hulu really too by now, the Hulu partners must be losing a lot of money internationally by staying US only.

You don't get games with Netflix though I don't think, it's just movies/TV.

In the US you do. I wouldn't be surprised if the UK Netflix was streaming only though as I *believe* the licensing works out better in their favour that way.

If its like their other operations outside of the US it'll just be a streaming service. It doesn't make much sense for them to invest in distributing discs when that business is on the wane.

I've been hoping this would come to the UK for years now. It's a really good service which gets a lot of good buzz from the podcasts I listen to. Hopefully their pricing will be decent over here.

They recently tried to split the US business in two, in an attempt to spin off the physical rental service with a second company called "Quickster". There was such an outcry over it that they abandoned the idea, but obviously they are indeed trying to stay out of that side of things.

If the service is anything like as good as the US one, with full TV series available on demand even on console/TV apps, I'm in. If it's like Lovefilm's streaming service, meh.

Will be interesting to see what affect this has on LoveFilm's streaming service, and if it'll be kicked into shape. Don't expect a great selection of stuff, however (in particular, I'll be very surprised if there's any anime at all on there. Manga UK has the overwhelming majority of UK licenses, and its parent company, Starz, had a spat and left Netflix in North America because it's management are babies. I'd be very surprised if the situation changes for the UK launch. Will be interesting if the latest series of Torchlight shows up, but I'd expect BBC Worldwide would have the rights in the UK).

£10 a month for Lovefilm is fine for me at the moment. If I switch it'll be because how good their streaming is
