Do you have this mentality? I'm constantly shifting goalposts. 5 years ago if I could see my career/income/living standards now (at least before COVID unemployies me) I would have said I'd be happy at that for my whole life. But now, I constantly strive for more - more money, more knowledge, better job titles, better apartment, etc.

Have you got the same problem? Did you find a way to overcome it? It doesn't make me happy

I've never had too much so it's hard to tell.

At the moment I'd love to be able to afford a nice little house in a half decent area. Would it make me happy? I believe so, but have no idea unless it actually happens!

Seeing as I'm still paying off debts from years ago, I cannot relate.

I'm jealous of your mentality. I am unemployed at the moment and living off redundancy. I really don't want to go back to work.

I guess if we were to have "enough", life wouldn't be worth living as you'd have nothing to work towards?

I'd be happy not having to work.

Not really. I'm not particularly ambitious (some may say lazy). All I want is a job where I don't get bullied and to earn enough to do the things I want. When I left my job (more accurately reduced my hours to 4 a week) it was to get out of a situation where I was being bullied, general job-dissatisfaction and to go to university. My main reason for going to university was to finally do something for myself after years of doing the right, responsible thing. I'm under no illusions that my degree (if I succeed) is doing to have employers knocking down my door to offer me a job. I would like it to be a springboard to move to Japan but I have nothing specific planned. But likewise I'd be happy if I ended up in a similar entry level position that I'm currently in. I'm mainly doing the degree for the enjoyment rather than any career plans

I think it's human mentality to always want more but I think the key for me is what will give me more enjoyment and benefit my happyness.

I'm seriously considering putting a request into work to condense my hours into 4 days. Life is for living and although I can't really afford the salary drop by just ditching a day, I do want one less day a week commuting and have more of a life-work balance.

Seriously though, if I had enough money to not have to work then I'd be happy enough. I work to live, not live to work.

Depends when you get them.

Two guys at my place asked for Condensed hours, which they got, but only if their extra day off was a Tuesday or a Thursday, when both of them had wanted Monday or Friday

Yes and no. I am at the stage of my life where we are looking for our forever home. We are able to afford the price range we want to pay for that home now, but I would like to go up one more level in terms of salary at work to make life just a little more comfy.

It's human nature.

Everyone needs something to strive for / work towards. The journey is always better than the destination.

If I won the lottery I'd leave my current job but I'd want to find something to do / some sort of work.

Oh and condensed hours is definitely the way to go. I work Monday to Thursday, so I only have to work three days this week.

I've just finished my foundation year (or will have in a few weeks when I've finished my assessments/online exam) and will be starting my degree properly next semester. Assuming I pass the Foundation Year I will be doing East Asian Studies in September

Make sure you specify what day you want off and give a reason why it has to be that day.

Yeah, unfortunately this is a basic human trait, there's no evolutionary advantage to being satisfied with what you have. Good in some ways in that society would have never progressed without it and no one would do much either but it can be a pain when you rarely get to feel relaxed and be at ease with yourself.

I have had my current job for less than a year and already feel dissatisfied with it and want something better.
