An early preview of the Digital Foundry vid, Dark1X from DF -

I'm pretty stunned by HOW good this game looks. Killer HDR too. I really love the way it looks.

I love that I can have an opinion on HDR now that I have a TV that fully supports it. So yeah, I will be giving this a try. Have not played Crackdown since the first one.

I expect Nick will be in to troll and post it's Metacritic score further clarifying the fact that he's turned into something of a parody and/or caricature of the SDF.

*they actually used a guy who hated the original to review it

Metacritic 66, but look at it this way.

This is likely to be the last of the games greenlit during the god awful Mattrick era.

Bring on next-gen and The Initiative :datass:

Uuuuurgh. RPS have given John "I dislike modern videogames" Walker the review for this so, I dunno, take the below with a huge pinch of salt.

https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2019/0 ... -3-review/

This is a sad affair. It’s playable, which is the faintest of damning praise. “I played it from start to finish, and only hated it a bit.” Pop that on the posters. But it’s mundane, humdrum, and irritating. It’s anachronistic, horribly left behind by the rest of gaming, and curled up shivering in the shadow of Saints Row IV that it so clearly wanted to be. Not even Terry Crews could make me like it, and gosh I love Terry Crews.

It's a re-skinned Crackdown 1 with a few extrea bits and bobs, as I said, thats grand but I predicted 4-5's reviews.

Most of the reviews are above that, Metacritic currently 62.

I reckon this will be good fun.

It is disappointing to see it score as low as it is, what was Crackdown and 2's scores? I loved Crackdown but just found 2 pretty shite and very boring, even in co-op.

I'd hate to echo Nicks post but I'm glad this is finally out so MS can put a line under it and look forward to the exclusives coming down the line. *

*Gears 5 is out in a few months also.

DF are quite impressed with this.

Pretty much locked 30fps and almost always native 4K on X1X along with some of the best HDR in gaming. Tons of options for PC, and Base X hold ups well albeit from 1080p downwards.

DF text -

I can understand the disappointment for those expecting the 'power of the cloud' to manifest in the single-player game, but it should be clear that Sumo Digital's Crackdown 3 was never intended to feature such destruction. Honestly, I'm not sure it would make sense. With a focus on collecting orbs and platforming, being able to take down structures would break the level design. The city itself is also far more complex in terms of design compared to Wrecking Zone - and indeed the cityscapes revealed in those older demos. But just to stress it one more time - what you do get really is a proper Crackdown sequel that honours the concept of the original while delivering visuals worthy of current generation hardware. It looks great, plays just as you would expect from a Crackdown game and runs smoothly too - especially so on Xbox One X.

It’s locked to 30fps in co-op on pc, hardly call it tons of options.

Anyway, I have it installed on my machine via gamepass to play later.

Presume it's locked to 30fps in co-op cos it's cross play.

Bare in mind Linneman is big into Retro games so I think this was exactly what he wanted.

Sea of Thieves wasn't. Capping it at 30fps for PC to PC co-op makes no sense, especially since Wrecking Zone doesn't have that restriction.

Sea of Thieves recently (last week) gave Xbox owners the option to not play with PC players so maybe that option will pop up on Crackdown and PC will continue it's 'supremacy' and return to 60fps.

Ugh, classic Walker. :fp:

Is he still being a hyper aggressive arse to anyone who disagrees with him in comments these days?

Jesus Christ! This week is a bit mental for videogames isn't it? Anthem (on Premier), Metro: Exodus, Far Cry: New Dawn and now this. Utterly ridiculous! Anyway, loved the first game, hated the second, will wait for the third. Sorry for the gooseberry fool post but these release schedules are bloody stupid!

Yup. He's the reviewer who most consistently torpedoes his own writing with a barely restrained disdain for any games that even hint towards modern sensibilities, and who uses the comments section of his own website to troll anyone who disagrees with him, or calls out his incredibly aggressive house style.

Which is a shame. Back when RPS was, I dunno, RPS he was a great presence on the site. He seems to have become incredibly jaded in the past few years and his reviews are almost useless as critical appraisals because of it.

Sounds about right. Like you say it is a shame as RPS used to be a fantastic place to frequent with some talented writers who just wanted to tell you about the stuff they were playing. I think I really lost interest around 4-5 years ago.
