I don't think "making an image still visible but very blurry" is a particularly good implementation of spoilers, which should completely hide something unless explicitly opened/revealed. Like that example, while spoilered I can still see it's a picture of a cat. If people were posting spoilered character reveals in a thread (like smash bros for example), people are going to get spoiled when they don't want to, because even blurred out characters will be recognisable. Another example would be someone posting a NSFW image - heavily blurring it isn't good enough. Also, if you browse without javascript, it's unspoilered. That's the opposite behaviour to spoilers here (or other places like resetera) where without js spoilered things are hidden.

There's a "classic" style collapsible spoiler, called "Hide Details".

Then consider my concerns resolved :toot:

I do prefer the look of this type of in-line text spoiler to the blurring but that's not a functional issue

Clearly this is the platform for GRcade. It has my full backing.

When do we move over?

Yeah the hide details works well, you can customise the message on the "Spoiler" reveal button/link as well!

I browse here with an extension to hide images and things unless I choose to show them to make it easier to browse at work - the only downside is that it reveals all inline spoilers! :fp:

Your username should have been converted to Somebody_Else's_Problem or Somebody_Elses_Problem - not sure if it likes apostrophes either. I had the same thing, but your username will display normally - there are two different fields.

There's a character limit, too, so I'm Somebody_Else_s_Prob

Lol, that's probably something easy to fix. Try just logging in with your email address too - your actual displayed username can be whatever you want :)

There are sometimes good accessibility reasons to expect things to work without JavaScript. IIRC screen readers for blind people sometimes struggle with dynamic content. On GRcade, I know Ironhide has limited mobility, and I know he prefers an older theme because of that, so if he's willing we should coordinate with him and make sure Discourse is suitably accessible.

Depends how you build your JavaScript. If it’s done badly it can cause issues, but done properly it doesn’t have to be an issue.

I'm a little out of the loop on the latest tech approaches, but my thinking - perhaps wrong! - was that Javascript is (as an Internet user rather than a program developer) something to avoid due to "security issues". I use a Mac and it's turned off by default.

No, that’s Java.

Java and JavaScript are totally different things.

Ah! Cool. Checked my iPad and, yeah, JavaScript is enabled, but it's off on my Mac's Safari browser. I'll turn it on, then!

Does the page load at all? Are you on 4G or WiFi?

We should migrate GRcade to Flarum. :toot:

Wi-Fi. It’s American Wi-Fi if that makes any difference, and it doesn’t even make an attempt at loading. Just comes straight up with, ‘Safari cannot load the page because the network connection was lost.’

Probably blocked on that particular network. Test on 4G.

It's the modern world, any privacy or security concerned individual should be greatly hesitant about allowing arbitrary code execution on their device from unknown sources :)

I'm only pointing out the change in behaviour in these situations, the raising of any and all issues should be welcomed, especially when it's a regression from current functionality. The subsequent prioritisation (and deciding what is and isn't a blocker to a migration) is separate to the current assessment where we're making note of all issues, so I don't think it's unreasonable at all to comment on things like non-js behaviour.

I especially don't think it's unreasonable to point out poor UX when javascript is blocked, where a workable solution is just as easy to implement. That's on the developer for not considering the non js use case. It's okay for some functionality to require js (that's why it exists), but the alternative UX should always be considered - even if it's a general solution of "this page requires javascript, sorry". In the specific case of revealing spoilers, a better implementation in the non-js case would be having the spoiler hidden, and preferably stating that the user should enable js to view them (or do something else as a workaround, like quote the post).

I don't think it's a blocker to a discourse migration, but I think it's noteworthy all the same.

Agreed, we can ditch the blur spoiler plugin and mandate the use of the "details" block that collapses the text.
