New Monitor (120hz+ or 1440p?)

As posted in PC thread:

Is anyone running a 120hz+ monitor and how worthwhile is the effect? I'm looking for a new monitor but weighing up option between a high refresh rate or higher resolution. My 670 gtx could probably push 2560x1440 okay, 4k monitors are available but my card just isn't up to the task.

I'm leaning towards a 1440p because my time is split between web/print design and gaming - so IPS appeals more. Also I think with a decent 27"+ screen I could probably go back down to just the one monitor.

I can spend up to 450 snoops.

Ive got a 144hz screen and I like it very much.

It depends where your priorities lie though really. If you value the response of the screen for shooty man or drivey car games, then 120hz+ is easily worth it. If you value the screen estate more then the bigger screen is what you want.

For me, Im happy enough with a 1080p desktop that I dont really need the extra space, but Ive spent the past few years with a screen hardlocked to 60hz and I am very much tired of that.

Another thing to consider is to have either screen you need a nice card to benefit from it in gaming scenarios. You either need the bandwidth to push the 120+ fps to use the screen or the bandwidth to feed a large screen space at lower fps. Again, its all about what you think you'll value most.

If I was prepared to spend that much on a monitor I'd go a little further and buy a 4k screen and just run it at 1080p when gaming.

You would get exact 4:1 pixel mapping and the pixels would be roughly the same size as a 1080p 27" monitor.

Thanks. It'd be good to see a 144hz monitor in action, but I'm kind of swayed to one of the 4K monitors coming out at the start of June now. My card will struggle no doubt, but I'll probably have the monitor for longer than I will a new card so it makes sense (to me) to get that sooner.

I've never seen a game in 1080p on a 4k screen, so you should probably try to check it out, first.

Might as well update your card too if you want to take full advantage of your 4k monitor.

Id probably buy 3x1080p panels over 1x4k

If you're seriously considering the 4K route then this article may interest you

If it were me, I'd go for 120hz over 1440p. You can always run a dual monitor setup for work and have the high refresh rates for gaming on one screen.

16:10 144hz 1440p. :datass: That would be the one.

I'm still not 100%. I'll wait for these 1ms 4k monitors to come out next week then see if and what kind of issues they have. 1440p will probably be the happy medium, surely there'll bring out ones with a higher refresh rate shortly.

When's that 1440p, 120hz Asus monitor with G-sync due out?

Intel are apparently partnering with Samsung to bring out $400 dollar consumer 4k 24" monitors, which is pretty cool.

Rumour has it sometime next month but Asus are being super coy about it even though it's the main question on interviewers have for them.

Edit: I did a quick check and it would seem it's been announce as of a few hours ago that it will be out Next month. It's a bit pricey but I may be tempted to get one after I sort a new card out.

I would much rather have an IPS monitor than one that is high refresh rate or higher resolution

I've decided to wait it out seeing as the new 4K monitors have had some really bad reviews from people on a lot of forums. Seems to be a widespread issue with the Display Port on some graphics cards, mainly AMD like the 290. Besides I don't think it would have been all that sensible a choice for what I'll be using it for.

Now I'm just looking out for a good offer on a decent sized 1440p monitor, around 27".

I'm quite tempted by this, apparently it's a very good panel but the grey/silver casing just looks a bit naff - still it's almost £200 cheaper than the black version (and I cant' vouch for the site):

Or if anyone is interested in a cheap 1440p monitor then this DGM 27" is only £240 with a 3 year warranty, it's an option to tide me over for a couple of years:

To confuse things further, this BenQ has absolutely everything I want in a monitor (besides 120Hz):

I'm very tempted to go with this now, I've been playing quite a few PC racing games with a wheel lately so the bigger screen would be nice, I could also use it from a distance...
