New Orleans residents flee Hurricane Gustav

Gustav, set to hit the US Gulf Coast on Monday, was described by Mayor Ray Nagin as "the storm of the century".

He warned that in the West Bank area of New Orleans, the highest levees were just eight to 10 feet, and were at risk from storm surges that could be as high as 24 feet.

At the city's main transit terminal, reports said a line snaked for more than a mile as residents with no other means of getting out waited to board buses bound for shelters in north Louisiana and beyond.

"If you are stubborn enough, if you are not taking this as seriously as we need you to take it, and if you decide to stay; you are on your own," he said.

"Anyone who decides to stay, I'll say it like I said it before Katrina: make sure you have an axe, because you will be carving your way, or busting your way out of your attic to get on your roof with waters that you will be surrounded with in this event."

Scary stuff for the residents of New Orleans, as another storm, which is described as the same category of force, 3 as Katrina. As a result, residents have been forced to flee the city as the Mayor has called for a evacuation of the city.

This has the potential to be one of the worst storms ever to hit America, worse then Katrina. A state of emergency has already been called in New Orleans and thousands more are expected to evacuate the city, to join in with the 300,000 who were evacuated from parts of Cuba as it hit parts of the Island.

Scary times then, are these sort of natural disasters going to continue in frequancy as a result of GLOBAL WARMING!!!!, this is the second storm in three years to hit the Gulf coast of America, or is this just some incredibly bad luck that the South of America is facing?

I think it's bad luck. The media reports that hurricanes are increasing in power and frequency, but they have ignored the fact that 2006 was one of the quietest yrs in recent memory and 2007 was very much an average yr.

The last hurricane proivided me with hours with entertainment, more of the same please.

Katrina strayed from the course that was most dangerous for New Orleans so a storm of similar strength hitting it dead on could cause much more damage.

After what happened the last time though, did these people not think "hey, I guess it's time to move somewhere else"?

Man if i was living there i would be like "not this gooseberry fool again!"

it seems like a hotspot for natural disasters.

I think one of the city planners wanted to move the whole city are re develop else where but most people considered it to be there home. I would have been out of there in a second though.

Although I went to New Orleans before Katrina and have to say it was a nice looking place especially in the French quarter.

My brother went there last October and said most of the city looked fine but some of the poorer districts were deserted.
