New PC with HD monitor query

Hey y'all,

I recently got a new PC with a 1920x1080 resolution (24") fully HD monitor. When I watch HD stuff on it there is a fair amount of blurring and I'm sure from seeing adverts for HD in shops and stuff that it's supposed to be pretty clear. I remember a friend saying he could make out individual blades of grass in football games on his TV, whereas I was just watching FlashForward and I noticed that in a close up mugshot the stubble on the guy's face was blurred, along with a lot of other things.

Do I need one of those special cable thingies?

EDIT - I'm really not great with PCs, so if there's any technical gubbins involved I'll need it spelling out!

If you're using HDMI or DVI, then you should already have everything you need. I'd question the quality of the file you're watching, to be honest.

Grab something pristene, like a blu-ray disc (or rip thereof, if you have no blu-ray drive) to check how well it handles full quality files.

Yeah, the lead makes the difference. If it's VGA, it's gonna look a bit blurry.

This could be the issue... Do you have a link to such a file that I could test out?

Does this mean I won't be able to watch Lost in full HD goodness when the new season starts?

If your gfx card hasn't got hdmi or DVI out then you aren't going to get a HD picture.

It would also help if you posted what monitor you bought as well as take a quick picture of what cable you're using and throw a link to what you're watching.

I have a 1920x1080 monitor and I can see everything. Even little marks on the skin of actors and that. I use the DVI cable for PC and HDMI for consoles.

That's the one I got, with the monitor size upgrade. I'd be willing to splash out on a new graphics card if it's required, as long as it's not too expensive.

I hope you don't think that all the old videos you may have are suddenly going to increase in resolution themself and be more clear. You have to be watching HD content to see the difference.

That monitor will be fine. You don't need a new graphics card.

What connection you using and what are you watching? Download any 1080p video, look on torrents or google for a 1080p video and you'll notice the difference. Even if it's VGA you should be getting good picture.

Well I saw that the FlashForward file was labelled as HD so I just expected it to be...

I got the same monitor as you (I also sold Fatal Exception the 22" version) - Very happy with it. It has dvi and HDMI sockets.

Are you sure it wasn't a release with HDTV in the name? That refers to the source. HD tv shows are usually put in .mkv files. If you pirate a video that ends in .mkv it's probably going to be HD.

Yeah a file labelled "HD" often just means higher quality or that it was encoded from an originally HD source.

A full 1080p feature or programme-length file should be fairly large (at least a few hundred MB). I guess it is difficult to know if something is the original 1080p resolution without the place you got it from explicitly stating it is full 1080p.

You can get "HD/1080p" videos that are compressed enough that they just don't look HD anymore.

I doubt it's a problem with your monitor unless the resolution isn't set to 1920x1080 yet.

Typically BRR (bluray rips) are about 2.2GB @720p or 6GB at 1080p. BRR files are ideal for converting to non-hd dvd files as the quality is excellent.
