I've only watched 2 episodes of Discovery so I can't really have a full opinion on it.

But the fact it has been so long since I watched those 2 episodes and haven't felt the urge to watch more is probably quite telling. I was coming off the back of the Picard disappointment so the residual funk from that was definitely a factor

Like, there’s nothing outright bad about it? It’s not amazing, it’s not awful, it’s just kinda...there? Was a nice waste of an hour or so once a week, for us.

God. I don't know why it irked me as much as it did. Apart from the fact that

Everything was a massive drama so nothing was
The future they envisioned was exactly the same as the future in their past only a bit more post-apocalyptic
The music was so overblown I swear multiple musicians must had died from blowing into their instruments so hard
Michael's constant whisper-talking
Tilly. Everything about her.
The first trans character getting killed within minutes of appearing.
The detestable frat-society tone of the crew's interactions.
The nonsense overarching plot.

I get genuinely angry just thinking about it.

There is only one character that I like and they ad-lib all their lines as the scripts are really poor. The cat.

I have been hate watching this since episode 3 of season 1.

I've ranted about this in all the other Star Trek threads, but I always forget there's a specific Discovery one.

So far so samey.

It has the usual whizz-bang action scenes, with the camera whizzing around and never staying still, or steady, for more than a moment.

But yeah, it was ok. It's not any different to the previous seasons in feel, so I don't see this changing anyones opinions of Discovery.
If you don't like Discovery this probably isn't going to be up your alley either.

Some episode spoilers for those waiting till next year.

I don't trust the President. At all. The fact she's part Cardassian probably plays into this, but she's up to something. Knows too much.
I'm assuming the big anomaly thing that's causing all the trouble is going to be linked to the experimental "Pathfinder Drive" being installed into Voyager that was mentioned.
I'm also assuming that Burnham's arc is going to be her learning to let go and let her crew do the job because she's the Captain now.

So yeah, I'm going to keep watching. It's fine. Nothing more, nothing less.

I've always been a bit ambivalent to the show. I don't love it, but I don't hate it either, despite it's numerous problems.

I think one of the things that never quite sits right with me for Discovery is that they don't feel like a starfleet crew at all. All the other shows tend to show the crew as colleagues first, some of whom become friends and more over the course of the show. Discovery's crew just feels like "pals in space", like Buffy the Vampire Slayer and her mates had a starship. Put any of these characters on any other Trek crew and they'd stand out like a sore thumb.

Can you imagine Picard putting up with Tillys gooseberry fool?

During the rescue mission Burnham puts the whole ship at risk to save a small handful of people on a station.
When she gets back to the ship, her and the President have a discussion about how as Captain she has to accept that sometimes she won't be able to save everyone and that if she keeps taking these massive risks eventually they'll bite her in the arse. They talk about the KM test and how it's about learning to deal with those situations.

I fully expect her to spend every single second of screen time looking tearfully distraught at everything/everyone all the time and whisper-talking about how she/they/everyone has no choice, they have to do this etc, all the while the ludicrously huge galaxy-ending threat du jour escalates to become so abstractly apocalyptic as to lose all sense of meaning and risk. Another character with almost zero previous backstory will get their "two days from retirement" intro during an episode, clearly signalling their imminent death which causes another two epsiodes of collective distraughtness.

Cross posting my thoughts on the Discovery trailer from the general Star Trek thread,

Discovery was lackluster in Seasons 1 and 2. I mean when your first season is so bad that the showrunners openly apologise for it then something is definitely going wrong. Then a promise to do better in Season 2 basically disregarded, before a nearly insulting hand wave ending to try and explain why they went so far off-script from the rest of Star Trek. Then Season 3 just utterly jumped the shark with a basically nonsensical main plot that within the context of Star Trek made pretty much zero sense. The whole concept of "The Burn" was utter garbage (And the explanation for it was just  ), and implying that by the 31st Century Starfleet and the Federation would still be using the same Matter/Antimatter reactors fuelled by Dilithium, despite series set over 600 years earlier showing that tech already being moved away from just showed that, much like Seasons 1 and 2, not only were they ignoring canon they were going out of their way to purposefully go against it. In seasons 1 and 2 it was perfectly clear that the showrunners resented making a prequel and wanted to make a sequel series, then when they found a way to twist it into a sequel they seemed to decide they didn't want to make Star Trek but their own Sci-Fi show.

Discovery feels like everyone involved basically did a quick skim of Memory Alpha once before production started and then never looked at the source material ever again.

Discovery is a Star Trek show in name only, it's perfectly clear that most of the people involved have little to no interest or love for the Star Trek franchise as a whole.
The fact that Discovery got a 5th season whilst Enterprise got cancelled after its fourth is a tragedy when Enterprise was infinitely more deserving of continuing.

And the end is near...

https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/tv/tv-news/star-trek-discovery-season-5-end-1235339464/

Season 5 will be the final season of Star Trek Discovery.

Mixed feelings about this.

It's easily one of the weakest Trek shows, but it still had it's moments and it gave us Strange New Worlds and Michelle Yeoh.

Hopefully it can go out strong, but I'm pretty sure it's going to be more of the same.

EDIT: With this and Picard both ending after their current seasons, that leaves Strange New Worlds as the standard bearer for Trek going forward. Which is as it should be given it's easily the best of the new shows.
