In Fuller we trust.

I like to think people are generally interested in more story arc-based series rather than standalone episodes due to viewing habits changing (binge watching, being able to catch up on missed episodes etc.) and there's no doubt that DS9 was the most story driven series so they should definitely be taking a leaf (or several) out of its book.

Saying that, the format, for me, is far less important than the crew. TNG and Voyager essentially had the same format but Voyager's crew was wholly unlikeable save for Tuvok and the Doctor (and only because they seemed to hate everyone on Voyager as much as I did).

Well, season 4 of DS9 onwards anyway. Before that it was pretty dull for the most part.

Yeah, agreed, some of the early stuff was shocking. But then, I'd argue Seasons 1&2 of TNG were pretty poor too. Star Trek shows always seem to have a rocky start.

On paper, Bryan Fuller is the perfect choice, given his familiarity with the franchise and the fact that he has grown substantially as a writer since he worked on DS9 and Voyager. I hope this works out - I'm just a bit worried about the show's budget, given that this is going to made for the CBS on-demand service rather than the proper network. But Bryan signing on may well mean that this is a non-issue.

That is very good news indeed. He was responsible for three of the best Trek movies.

EDIT: How cool would it be if the series was set in the more militaristic, red-uniformed era of the earlier movies?

Is this being set in the new 'alternate' timeline?

Not sure if I want that...I mean at all. I want something set in the after the end of Voyager preferably.

There's been no announcement either way, but rumours point to it being set in the TV show universe, since that's what CBS own the rights to. Paramount own the film rights.

In some ways theyre damned no matter what way they go with it, so many people will want so many different things that people will be disappointed no matter what they do. Personally I think they will set it in the "alternate" timeline, its too easy not to do it frankly. They can have a bunch of touchstones to the old stuff but not have to get bogged down by the existing Trek canon, which lets face it, is pretty exhaustive. They also sidesteps the problem of trying to bring in new fans while not alienating the existing ones, the new timeline gives everyone roughly the same footing with characters and settings.

The problem is that does alienate some existing fans as a large amount as seen with the new films, just can't let go of the old stuff and constantly compare, especially if you are setting it in one of the previous times of a previous series, whether it's the original, next gen, ds9 or voyager.

Personally I'm still hoping for a post-Nemesis series set in the main universe.

About strawberry floating time that they revived Star Trek as a TV show. Big fan of TNG and DS9.

I actually liked the last two movies. I think following that example of rebooting it would be good. Or setting it far in the future with even better technology would be class as well.

I haven't watched Voyager exhaustively but they had some awesome ships in there that you only got to see for about one episode (I'm looking at you, Message in a Bottle). I want the Prometheus class, Sovereign class, all that jazz :datass:

Maybe having more than one main ship/mission would be an idea. DS9 had both the station and the Defiant, and regularly had the cast spread across quadrants advancing several main storylines. That, mixed in with some high level San Francisco stuff that we don't really see in the shows (bar the occasional Skype call), could work quite well. Could have different sorts of objectives for each crew, show off more of the galaxy, and culminate in a sort of Federation civil war scenario with a mix of clashing admirals and clandestine Section 31-ery.

I like that idea.

I always thought something like a Star Trek Chronicles style show would be cool. Follows a different race each episode, and an over arching plot to tie it together.

I think it's time to boldly go further into the future, with plenty of new ships, technologies and aliens.

A Star Trek show based solely on time travel...just no.
