Could "test flight" not just mean pilot episode?

I don't think the numbers work like that as the Enterprise had the same number just with alphabetical names as well.

Why would they have an Enterprise D with the same number for example.

Precisely - the numbers definitely don't work like that.

Also, the ship looks more advanced than TOS, with three... bussard ramscoop collectors in each nacelle, for example.

Looks like they tried to model the ship after the triangular federation symbol.

Ship is quite reminicent of Klingon designs as well.

Regardless of the era I'm hyped. Started my DS9 rewatch today with "Emissary".
First episode and Sisko is right up in Picards face giving him grief about Wolf 359. Love DS9.

The registry numbers definitely do work like that.

The Enterprise in TNG just had the same number with a letter prefix because they were re-using the same name and the name is tied to the registration number.

You may be right, since the Discovery doesn't have any letters after the number...

I thought it looked a bit Klingon too, and briefly hoped for some sort of joint Klingon/ Federation premise, but that would never work...

I want to know more damnit!

Could it be possible that Starfleet started reusing old registries once they reached NCC-99999, to prevent them from getting too long?

 I admire your optimism.

This looks for-sure pre-TOS to me. Something a bit weird is definitely going on with the rear half of the ship, stolen Klingon tech might be a good shout.

Enterprise got good once the Xindi showed up. Like pretty much every Trek since TNG, it had a difficult first 2 seasons. Sadly it lost a lot of viewers, and never fully recovered. A shame, because the Terra Prime stuff in Season 4 had real potential.

So you are saying I should give Enterprise another chance, I think I gave it less than 10 episodes back in the day

As for this I have really high hopes for it, I do hope it is not pre-TOS, but it is not a deal breaker

They should've gone with the original opening theme, but it got relegated to end credits instead,

There's exactly enough time for "space, the final frontier..." during the quiet bit at the start too. It could have been good. :(

Enterprise was really annoying. It just started getting good and then they cancelled it.

Same thing happened with Stargate Universe as well :(

Stargate Universe's problem was that it tried to make Stargate too dark and gritty. Whilst SG-1 and even Atlantis certainly had their moments, there was always an optimism to the show. Universe on the other hand sucked all the optimism away.

After an in depth research (read: frantic googling), I found this really good explanation of Starfleet ship registry conventions.

http://www.ex-astris-scientia.org/artic ... stries.htm

Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be any way of precise reckoning, since many ships seem to be registered arbitrarily. NCC-1031 would appear to precede NCC-1701, but it's all up in the air. At the very least we can perhaps surmise that the Discovery is pre- next gen, since both Voyager (NCC-74656) and Defiant (NX-74205, then NCC-75633) have an extra digit.

Do we know yet when this show will be set and whether it links in at all with the new films.
