Is this one of those gender-fluid kinda deals? :shifty:

I think the original show runner has a quirk of giving female lead characters a male name from what I have read. It was slightly confusing at first as I didn't know if that was her surname, but once I got used to it I found it no issue at all. By the 23rd century you would assume that gender specific names will probably be irrelevant.

It really is incredible that the series finale ended up being so amazing.

I really enjoyed that one, for being just a great standalone sci-fi story with characters I know and love involved.
Spider Barclay scared the gooseberry fool out of me as a kid though :shifty:

I cant remember much of season 7, was it really that bad? All I can remember is the finale and the episode lower decks which is about the junior crew members, which I guess is the ensigns episode.

Just looked it up, there are some bad episodes in that season, hah I always thought it was one of the better seasons because of those two episodes.

Season 5 is the best season

Just saw an advert for this on TV, first one I've seen. It's also the first time I've seen Netflix advertise an individual show rather than just the service and highlighting a couple of shows.

I'm not going to complain about them doing something new with Star Trek. There is a reason Enterprise flopped. The same basic formula has been repeated too long, with only DS9 really deviating. DS9 is, funnily enough, many people's favourite series of the bunch and mine too.

The main positive I have taken from the first two episodes is that I kind of like where they have gone with the Klingons, which surprised me. It is kind of interesting to see how they view the threat of the Federation not as a military one but as a creeping cultural imperialism that threatens their own culture. You can sort of see echoes of both Islamic extremism and right wing populism in the language they use. The Federation, by contrast, are the multicultural blob that destroys entire ways of life simply by coming into contact with them and not firing a single shot. Another positive is that this show looks absolutely beautiful. I don't know if the budget will carry through into the later episodes though. I'd say more than half of what you see on screen came from a processing core and not a camera.

On the down side I'm not really feeling any connection with Michael, who is supposed to be our lead here. She seems coldly competent on one hand but then punctuates that with moments of complete recklessness that endanger herself and others; showing herself ready to tear up the rulebook the moment things aren't going her way. I find it hard to sympathise with her for those reasons as she seems like someone I would not want to trust with my own safety (pretty bad if she is supposed to be captain). Also, the first two episodes seemed to waste a lot of time establishing what seems to be just prologue for the rest of the series and cast.

They definitely did that for all the marvel shows too

There were so many strawberry floating Defenders ads in the week before it came out.

This is one line of dialogue that I think (hope) will be key for the entire premise of the show

“Universal law is for lackeys. Context is for kings.”

I'm assuming they'll explain how they have access to a kind of teleportation technology that doesn't seem to exist in the future so it's either banned or causes everyone who uses it to die horribly in which case bad times for Micheal. I like the show but that aspect will take some explaining.

I know this is stupid but during the fight scene in the galley my immediate thought was "Serves you right for switching Sci-Fi shows" as the 3 other convicts were all from The Expanse. Get back to your own Sci-Fi universe you traitors.

They let transwarp die out after the Excelsior was sabotaged by Scotty, so they could easily drop this, too.

Fair point.
I'm certainly going to stick with it and watch the whole thing I just hope there's some actual discovery done by a ship named Discovery.
The Klingons can still be the big bad guys in the background but let's see what's out there.
