I watched episode 1 of season 2. I felt it was really dull to be honest. Just more Canon breaking nonsense and something about unidentified signals. Lorka is going to be a big absence this series.

What, precisely, is broken? Nothing annoys me more than nerds whining about strawberry floating canon, as if TOS is some sort of religious document.

What annoys me the most is complaints about the ships and technology in Discovery being more advanced than those in later series set 100 years further into the future. This really doesn't bother me. What show creators can now imagine and create graphically is far superior to that from even the 1990s when the Next Generation was made, let alone the 60s. I want to see this taken advantage of.

Exactly. I see it as interpretations. TOS is the 1960s interpretation of the tech, the stories, the uniforms, etc. Discovery is the modern interpretation of those things. I'm pretty certain that if Roddenberry could have made TOS look like Discovery does, and had access to those effects, he would have done so.

As much as I love Star Trek this cannon bollocks really does strike me as a case of people who try and claim superiority over other fans.

I see this series as the start of a new era like the Abrams films so they can do what they like. I don't care that it makes no sense that the spore drive technology was never mentioned in previous Trek series or that the Klingons never mentioned the stuff that happened in series 1 of Discovery.

I'm not a big fan of Discovery as I don't think the tone of the show is right for Trek but I don't give a crap about cannon unless they kill baby Picard or force Riker to join a monastery and become celibate for life so he can't go about banging alien babes.

Riker is so sexually potent he makes androgynous aliens fancy a bit of him.

Watched the first episode. I didn't see the big jump in quality that a lot of people were talking about. I'll continue to watch it because it's Star Trek.

Then break from canon.

But this series (like Abrams) relies on canon to give it any sort of weight (e.g. Spock. Pike, Enterprise, Mirror Universer, Section 31, all of into darkness) and then ignores/butchers it.

Have a clean break. But if you rely on viewers familiarity with cannon to do your legwork in your lazy half backed story idea, don't be annoyed when people complain when you then piss on it.

They could have avoided all of this by (say) setting it XX years after Voyager...but then didn't because they're lazy hack writers using pre-existing knowledge of viewers as a crutch.

2 episode in...and uhhhhh.

Episode 1 was weird. Full of odd little inconsistencies that jarred. There was hope certainly - a little bit too much ACTION! EXCITING THINGS ARE HAPPENING! And tying it into Spock feels like a desperate attempt to get existing fans on board that's going to create more problems than it solves.

The actual central concept isn't bad.

Episode 2 felt the most Trek (and the "compromise" at the end was a good dilemma that was well handled) I just wish the entire episode felt like that.

I've no idea what's going on with Tilly. I didn't mind her too much in S1 as a lowly cadet/ensign/whatever when the show was much more "lower decks" than focusing on Bridge Crew. But now...she's just annoying and jarring. This is Starfleet's youngest ever command candidate? Dear God why? It wouldn't be so bad if the crew called her out on it (SHUT UP WESLEY) - but everyone claps/applauds/"that's our Tilly"

I think the biggest problem is...it feels like it things it's audience is dumb. Everything is over explained. There's so much "As you know..." etc. In TNG it made sense as normally there'd be a staff meeting etc where (for example) the Engineer would explain the problem is technical terms, and another (non specialist) crew man would put it across simply [for the audience]. But in this universe the specialists are all talking down to each other. People tell you exactly how they feel. The music makes you know something exciting is happens etc. Even when it wants to subvert expectations it signposts it before and afterwards so much to neuter any effect.

Doesn't using the Spore Drive kill the universe

Rather enjoying this series now. The shift with the Klingons has me hopeful they can do the canon justice.

Tilly is starting to stick out like a sore thumb though. She was ok in series 1 but this series it feels like they are going out of their way to have a kooky sort of character.

Edit: Just read Hexx's post above, agree with exactly those thoughts on Tilly.

How strawberry floating good is the camera work, though?

Pros: * Starting to feel a bit more Star Trek-y * Pike is actually surprisingly likeable
Not sure: * I like Tilly so I'm glad for her screen-time, but the command training stuff seems like a distraction and a bit of a misstep for her character
Cons: * The writing is still pretty bad * I wish it weren't all about Spock, if nothing else it feels like a crutch for the show

Pretty much my thoughts. I disliked the opening ep due to its overly long action sequences, but the second was a proper return to form. And Pike is strawberry floating great.

Me too for this (Tilly :datass:), although i guess i'm too much of a stickler for the old format. TNG had several long running plot threads that came and went but each episode was also self contained so they had to get on with each story a bit more. Discovery suffers from the same problem as all big us tv series which is that it takes forever to get on with things. I'm not sure i can take much more of Michael looking serious/distraught at anything and everything for at least a quarter of each episode.

Quite disappointed with the first episode! Michael is so annoying...typical storyline...something goes badly wrong and Michael saves the day again! :fp: They might as well make her Captain!

It's hard to see Michael as a protagonist as she is basically Vulcan lite so isn't allowed to inject much emotion into proceedings. It probably would have been wiser to kind of stick to the classic format from TNG of having each episode focus on a different character each week within the overarching story. Star Trek isn't particularly suited to having the same lead character every single week, aside from TOS which was very much a different era of television.

Yeah, that was A Very Good Episode. The convenience of the "oh yeah, we've got something for that" fungus sucking device was a bit jarring, but the rest of it was great.

I actually disliked the third episode. All of a sudden went all Game of Thrones and now my wife refuses to watch it. Trek should remain a bit more accessible.

I agree.
Best episode of the entire series by far and I think Saru is going to go on an epic crusade against the enslavement and murder of his people and I don't think anyone could argue he's wrong to do so.
