With many of us planning on buying a next gen console this year what are you expecting the overall budget to be?

For me I think it'll be about £1000.
I'm getting both Xbox Series X and PS5 which I expect to be £400 and £500 and I'm going to get a couple of games which will add about £100.

That's quite a lot for a single year for me but I have gamepass for years so my need to buy games after this year should be pretty limited.
How does that compare to you guys?

I have a big PS4 backlog so I think what I’m most likely to do is sell the PS4 and buy a backwards compatible PS5. So probably £500 less whatever cash I can get for a PS4.

I’ve never doubled up in a generation with the big two so at this point I probably wouldn’t get an Xbox too. But I am interested to see what Microsoft come out the gates with this time. They seem to have been making lots of the right moves this time and Sony exclusives, while generally high quality, can get a little samey.

I think its going to be more than that.

£599 really wouldn't surprise me as the cost of the Series X, I think £400 is probably reasonable for the PS5.

I'm also going to be looking to buy the Analogue Pocket, which is probably going to come in around £250 (after shipping and import duty) and maybe the Playdate, not sure either can be considered 'next-gen' but they are on my budget for next year.

I'll hopefully be cutting down on spending overall though, no more VR products or PC upgrades planned for at least a few years and hopefully less games I'm not playing too.

Unless the Series X is €700 I’ll be buying one at launch.

£500 for a new console is my limit.

Only just bought into PS4 and have a big selection to get through so won't be getting a new console anytime soon.

Probably looking at spending about £750 on a PC build/upgrade this year though.

Given my recent "life" expenditure my plan to not invest in the next generation is now set in stone.

For those of you doing so, however, I see a £700-800 minimum to hit the ground running with all the bells and whistles.

Around £550-600 for every one else

£500 max on a console. I’ve only just got an Xbox One so I’ve loads to play until I can get a new console.

I plan on buying Analogue Pocket, Playdate and Evercade this year.

I’ll pick up a next gen Xbox and PlayStation but I don’t see myself rushing to get them on release day. I’ll probably wait a year or two.

I'm waiting for them but have no plans to buy yet. I want to know exactly what I'm getting into before I go in. I've got no budget in mind, but I probably will aim for £400-£450, which is what both Xbox One machines and the Switch were within. If I have to go over, I'd want it to only be at maximum ten pound more. However, for me to even bite on launch, there needs to be something truly great that I'll enjoy, such as a great open world full of things to explore that goes beyond what this current gen could offer.

Doubt I'll buy PS5 at launch, but maybe I'll end up going halves with my girlfriend. £500 is the max I'll stretch for a new console, which others seem to share as a limit.

plus 1 for 500.

If it is 500 I intend to get a ps5 at launch if it is backwards compatible with ps4 games. My ps4 broke and I have I backlog but may as well wait for ps5 if it is backwards compatible. Im hoping they do ps5 version of Last of Us 2 at launch.

Then I'll get an xbox a little later into its life (not necessarily waiting for a price decrease but Im not going to buy 2 new consoles at the same time)

No budget in particular (though under £450 would be nice obviously), but I will only be buying one machine at launch (or thereabouts) and then the other system a few years later whenever the first upgrade is.

With so little information available at the moment I haven’t decided what console I’ll be buying first yet. Would prefer the most powerful machine but of course the games are everything.

At this moment in time I don’t plan on buying either of the new systems at launch. I have a huge backlog on PS4 and Switch that will keep me busy this year.

I won’t be going next-gen for a few years as we’re saving for a house etc at the moment, and I’ve still got hundreds, literally hundreds, of games to finish on this gen (err, and last ten) before I move on.

Er, I have a backlog of over 20 games and only own a Switch from this generation. Next-gen is not even close to being on my radar.

I'm really not sure. I have all the current consoles and at some point they've all been worthwhile. I really like the direction Microsoft is going but PS4's exclusives have been so good. At this point I have a pretty reasonable collection on birth consoles so I either have to have a clean break or just accept I'll get them both at some point.

The only curve ball for me is that I've really enjoyed having the portability of the Switch and a gaming laptop is a genuine possibility as an alternative to home consoles.

Only one of them at launch and £500 is probably the max I'd be willing to put out for that and some games.
